Interesting. This ties to the thread about deaths at the falls.

    >Unable to identify and implement effective safety measures, the state gives up, and locks the people out of the resource the people supposedly "own." Ask yourself how long before this happens in many other places you used to enjoy visiting?

    >Of course, this is another knee jerk reaction, where one hand does not know what the other hand is doing. Remarkably, the county tourist promotion site that is linked from the newspaper articles about this closure is still actively promoting parking there, and hiking the (now inaccessible) trail.

Feels more and more like the Adirondacks...

The announcement "conveniently" mentions that you can still park at Laurel House Road or Schutt Road and walk the trail down to the base of the falls.

Now the way I see it there is a correlational between people wanting to capture a moment outdoors and bad judgement.

There is even a webpage about selfie related deaths and injuries.

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...ies_and_deaths

And then there are people that are willfully stupid! I mean they climb into zoo encloses with extremely dangerous animals.

I don't know how the state is going to stop people dying at the falls. I don't think it can be done.

Yes, the parking lots there are MUCH bigger and safer than the other lot, which required walking along a state highway with essentially 0 shoulder area. And people, following the law, walked against traffic, both ways, making the situation even worse.

The article says, "The Molly Smith parking area and the Kaaterskill Falls Trail from Route 23A to the base of the lower falls will continue to remain closed for trail construction", so I don't think it's permanent. Also, if you are ambitious, there are other small lots near by.

And it's Scutt Road for anyone googling it.

There’s an Albany News 10 story that says closure is just for the season. Memorial Day thru October

            https://www.news10.com/news/local-ne...erskill-falls/

The closure has to do with Traffic and Pedestrian safety as stated in the quoted post.

I read on FB, that the parking is closed because of on going work at the falls by the DEC contracted trail repair company. But I can not verify this.
