  • Permission for Graham and Doubletop

Bill Fiedler took over as the new caretaker upon Bill Scholl’s retirement and he can be reached at (607) 221-1277 to arrange for
permission to hike Graham and Doubletop.

FYI: As of 2019, hiking was prohibited during big game season (dates vary) on these peaks. But trail access is not restricted.

Cut/paste from the 3500 club facebook page:

UPDATE 1/13/20!! Please read even if you have seen the thread already!

We have more information thanks to a hike leader from another club and follow-up by Jake Haisley, our Club Aspirants Chair.

The new land manager has been encountering numerous, very large groups of over 20 hikers in one group. This is not even allowed on Forest Preserve land. Because of that, he is implementing even further procedures for hiking on the Gould property. He may ask for each hiker in a group to call him INDIVIDUALLY to register and to discuss the rules.
He clarified that for groups of a few hikers who know each other and can account for one another, one call should be sufficient. When you call him, you should tell him what you are hiking and with whom. If he tells you that your party is good to go, then you're good to go. If you don't know who you're hiking with because you're part of a big hiking group, then those other people will need to call too.
Bushwhacks from DT to Graham will be allowed for now.
He is going to be on site on weekends to greet hikers so don't assume you can slip by. Also ponder what that may mean down the road if enough people do not follow the procedure....
      Original post below.
Re-posting this information as this is SUPER important for everyone to know and to get the word out.
Doubletop and Graham require permission to hike which means a call to the caretaker : Bill Fiedler (607) 221-1277.
He is new and recently told one of our board members how surprised he was by how many hikers are NOT calling..
Edit: from the Can Man, Jim Bouton: "Bill would also like everyone to stay on the old access road to Graham and the main herd path to DT. Also sign in the register on DT with the name you gave Bill or the contact if it is a group"
The private landowners could revoke access at any time...so spread the word, do the right thing if you are hiking either mountain.
Our access is a privilege, not a right.
