  • Plateau, Sugarloaf 1-9-20

It was 7 degrees at home base and it got up to 14 at the Mink Hollow trailhead. Good thing there was virtually no wind and full sun. After a chilly time getting ready to go, we heated up quick on a 3/4 mile bushwhack shortcut to the trail at about 2,900’. Nice crunchy supportive snow, only occasionally stepping through a bit in a drifty area.

We saw footprints of prior travel on the trail and our Hillsounds were effective for the ascent to the Plateau summit. We made a group decision to kick up the traction a notch for the descent. We switched to Hillsound Trail Crampon Pros, Black Diamond Crampons and Kahtoola Trail Crampons. For all except the Kahtoolas, it was the first time wearing these.

We were all quite pleased with the extra traction and we kept them on until 3,100’ when we switched back to the standard Hillsounds.

Over at Sugarloaf, we switched back to the crampons just below the dicey spot and kept them on for most of the rest of the hike. Numerous deployments of the 100’ one inch webbing on the descent kept us all a bit safer on a nice cold icy day.

spike specs: Hillsounds (4 pair), Hillsound Trail Crampon Pro (2 pair), one each of Black Diamond Crampons and Kahtoola Trail Crampons.
