Mace and I are definite, haven't spoken to Ward, but I think he may be there as well. We'll be leaving from Speculator early Saturday morning.......not sure if anyone wants to meet us there Friday night? Mavs......Mace was calling you this morning with the Home Depot info........who is going to cut the steps to size? Something we could possibly do Friday night in Spec? L

Boards are all cut and loaded in my car....... Dem puppies is HEAVY. Probably close to 4 lbs a piece. I hope we can get enough bodies there to help lug these things. I think, depending on how strong of a hiking party we get 3-5 boards a piece will be max. They are bulky and cumbersome.

I would plan to use overnight bags that have straps that can cinch. Either that or we can duck tape them together. I plan on using my 3500 cc medium overnight pack.

Probably the easiest to lug. ADK is gonna bring a few "treat" for the work party. I will be at the Trailhead by around 8:40-45 AM on Saturday and we can distribute the load then.

and anyone else for that matter.....I have plenty of room at my place Friday and Saturday nights. Might even have some time to take a boatride around Lake Pleasant,,,,,, and wet a line as well. We also have the yaks if anyone has time for a paddle. I won't be getting there until about 7:30 Fri night.... but can have Wardy open the place up. Not sure if you recall....when you come in on Rt 8 and go past the golf course and churches......the next right is Northwoods Lodge, very old brown and yellow sign. I'm the third place on the right, white and light blue.
I see Neil has found some new land, and will not be joining us.......it just won't be the same.

**UPDATE**

Weather looks marginal for "high in the upper mountains" hike, so feel free to change your plans and help haul some lumber.

I've notified the DEC that we'll be on the Mountain for work on Saturday so we're set there.

Pressure treated wood is very variable when it comes to weight, so I weight 4 boards separately and they average 6-7 lbs a piece (heavier then I thought). We'll need some manpower. I think that we might be better off using a shuttle approach. Where one group carries a load from point A-B, and then another from B-C and then the last from C-D. That way we can "station" the strongest in the group on the steeper sections, and the "not as strong" hikers on the lower, flater and longer sections.

If we get 3-4 (or more) per section and divide the mountain in three sections, your talking, It'll only mean 3 trips max of each section if we can 4 treads in each load (27-30 lbs worth). I also think that we should also consider traveling as a group over lake Jimmy as it's bound to be high and we should be make getting safely across a priority.

Let's plan to meet at the trailhead a wee bit earlier (8:15 AM ish) for a little planning meeting. We'll figure out the best course of action and go at it.

The bridge over Lake Jimmy was recently repaired and seemed to have plenty of clearance from the water this past Sunday.

Mace has his MSR Denali's ready to go! (too bad no photo of him last time!) I'm appreciative of the repair to the bridge as well......for some reason, when I walked on it, it seemd to sag into the water? I'm not really over weight either, just a little shorter than I should be. L

The heavy rain that central NY is getting looks to be just missing the lower High peaks according to doppler.

It is suppose to rain overnite (who knows how much) but if the upper sections that are a little steeper are wet and people are concerned carrying weight up the wet rock we can definitely go with Mavs partial carry idea. The fact that these puppies are 7 lbs a piece while being 2x10x24 has changed things a bit when it comes to what you can handle. I'll go back on Sunday if we don't finish Saturday.

Thanks Cory. I have a 3500 cc (top-opening) overnight pack. 3-4 fit in there easily and a pretty reasonable load, even for my fat, out of shape butt. I could haul that up to the top no problem. I think the relay is probably the is the easiest though.

If stationed on the lower section. I am certain that I could shuttle 5-6 at a time from the cabin for about the first mile (up 500' or so). Very reasonable grades on that low section. You can get 2 people shuttling heavier loads the low sections. and then 3-4 on the middle section (up 600'-700 feet). Shorter distance, but steeper grades. Probably can get loads of 3-4 boards a trip. Then stage the rest 4-5 or so to taken that last 600'-700' stretch (steep as a mofo) to the summit. Loads might be smaller up there, but your compensated by have more manpower. I think we'll have about 10-12 folk (still room for more).

Anything we don't get up, can get stashed at the cabin and Cory can do it Sunday, OR anyone else from the site and haul up a board or two in the next few weeks. We'll get the Lion's share up tomorrow though.
