  • Patagonia down sweater hoody compared to a fleece

Lately when I get to the top of the mountain I put on a very thin fleece, thick fleece, and thin primaloft jacket (hoodless) and if needed a very old down vest.

If we are just stopping to adjust a snowshoe or eat a granola bar I don't put all this on.

I was thinking of replacing the thicker fleece and down vest with one very nice nice down jacket.

Would the Patagonia down sweater hoody be such a jacket?

This way I could eat my cheese sticks in style.

Not super familiar with that jacket, but based on the reviews I would want something more substantial for winter peaks. People are referencing temps in the 20s-40s F. I'm perfectly comfortable in my down parka (typically over a thin baselayer & thin softshell) at 0F & below; sweating at 40F standing still. If you are looking to keep more of a layering situation then it will probably work, but if you're looking for a toasty layer for longer stops, it might fall short.

Me too. After some trial and error when I first started winter hiking I've settled on throwing a hooded synthetic puffy over the top of everything I'm wearing. I'm toasty warm for a good 30-45 minutes milling around on summits in negative windchills. Once I get the slightest chill I know it's time to pack up and start moving again. I bought the puffy a size larger than normal so it would easily fit over everything.

I ended up buying the Patagonia Fitz Roy Down Hoodie - Men's

    https://www.rei.com/product/175229/p...wn-hoodie-mens

at the Mountain Man store in Saratoga. 30% off!

    It weights 17 ounces.

Now I will just have a thin fleece, and thin primaloft jacket (hoodless) and the Fitz Roy in my pack and I should be good.

The Primaloft jacket weights more than the Fitz Roy.
