  • It's tick season

Certainly not the earliest that I've ran into one but had one on me today.

I needed to run down to Elizabethtown this afternoon. Wirh some free time on the way back, I made a stop at the Thrall Dam Park in Lewis.

There's quite a bit of interesting history here and it's on full display at the trailheads. The info board displays a history of the park and the man made dams that used to be there. The board also provides pertinent info on the park including tick warnings.

There have been a number of Thrall Dams over the past 100 years. All of the dams were destroyed by mother nature. Don't mess with the power of the Burpee Brook!

The last dam failed in the 80s. In the time since, beavers have made a new dam and so far they've been more successful than humans.
DEC evidently stocks the "lake" with trout.

I walked down to the sites of the former dams / current beaver dam... Beautiful.

Like I said, this was a quick time killer on the way home. Back at the trailhead, I could feel something crawling on my back. I grabbed it. A tick...

I know ticks aren't uncommon at points south of the ADK right now... They're definitely awake and hungry here now.

Really quick update: A few minutes after making this post, I, went to take my nightly shower and found one attached to my shoulder...

Just found another on my back..

Damn! What, are they flying through the air?

          How was the fishing?
My mind was wandering like the wild geese in the west.

Get your ticks tested for free at Upstate. Also, all sorts of info on the tick surveillance data.

It's easy, I've done it a few times.

            That's strange.
Are you sure that these were ticks?
AFAIK from theory and from my own and my friends experience ticks are supposed to attach to crotch, armpits and other soft wet body parts.

thankfully i have yet to find any ticks in those spots you mention on myself.
the last two attached ticks i removed from myself were attached and engorged on the outside of my upper arms by the shoulder, and i think all the ones i have found on myself over the years have been arms, chest or back; never pits.
i believe my girlfriend had one attached to the outside of her lower arm this spring.

I've gotten ticks everywhere. Including the armpit and on my ____. They try to go for warm spots but will attach anywhere they can. I've had them on my stomach, back and knee before. My daughter had one on her chest a few years ago.

And, these most recent ones were definitely deer ticks.

Also, I still have a mark/scab on my shoulder and it's been over 5 weeks. I got a high dose of doxycycline and have had no symptoms.

Found a tick on the wall the other day. It must have hitched a ride in on my clothes after one of my walks in the woods locally here.

Just remembered that Pokey got one 2 weeks ago. We were in the process of moving. Our old landlord was a slumlord and had given up on everything including mowing the yard. I asked Pokey to grab a toy from the yard to throw in the car and a few minutes later she noticed a tick on her. It hadn't attached. I quickly killed it.

Most creative tick I ever had found a home inside my bellybutton. Had to have been there a couple of days before I found the little guy/girl. I scratched the area a few times but never thought to look there.

I tested positive for Lyme disease last week and am currently taking antibiotics (Doxycycline). I got tested and began treatment within three days of the first symptoms. My best guess as to how and where I got it is sitting among blueberry plants amid occasionally damp ground litter during this year's bounteous harvest. Didn't see a tick or identify a specific bite.
