Certainly not the earliest that I've ran into one but had one on me today.
I needed to run down to Elizabethtown this afternoon. Wirh some free time on the way back, I made a stop at the Thrall Dam Park in Lewis.
There's quite a bit of interesting history here and it's on full display at the trailheads. The info board displays a history of the park and the man made dams that used to be there. The board also provides pertinent info on the park including tick warnings.
There have been a number of Thrall Dams over the past 100 years. All of the dams were destroyed by mother nature. Don't mess with the power of the Burpee Brook!
The last dam failed in the 80s. In the time since, beavers have made a new dam and so far they've been more successful than humans.
DEC evidently stocks the "lake" with trout.
I walked down to the sites of the former dams / current beaver dam... Beautiful.
Like I said, this was a quick time killer on the way home. Back at the trailhead, I could feel something crawling on my back. I grabbed it. A tick...
I know ticks aren't uncommon at points south of the ADK right now... They're definitely awake and hungry here now.
Really quick update: A few minutes after making this post, I, went to take my nightly shower and found one attached to my shoulder...
Just found another on my back..
