Tackled MSG from HPIC. Hit the trail at 8:00 a.m. under snowy skies, which persisted all day long. Trail well packed until Marcy Dam, then continually softer and unconsolidated. But tracked!

Marcy summit at 12:30 with strong winds from the south. Visibility was basically cairn to cairn, throw in some graupel pelting us in the face as we descended into the wind.

Quick lunch at Four Corners where we met Ralph Haddock coming down from Skylight. We all agreed to share the load and break trail if necessary. and return via Lake Arnold rather than deal with Marcy again.

QUICK QUESTION: Is Four Corners the farthest point (on trail) from any trailhead in the ADK?

Summited Skylight at 1:30, then over to Gray by 2:30, where we again met Ralph coming down.

Descended Feldspar Brook Trail, which was incredibly soft, but "broken out." Numerous falls when stepping too close to the side of the trail.

A bit demoralizing to hit the Lake Arnold Trail junction and realize you still have 6.2 miles to go. That 1.5 miles up to Lake Arnold was a soul sucker. Trail still very soft and sandy.

Beyond Lake Arnold, trail in better shape, and our pace quickened. We never caught up with Ralph, and fortunately, we didn't need to break that trail.

That last climb, just before the parking lot, sucks any remaining life from your soul after nearly 18 miles.

Returned to the parking lot by 6:30. Burgers and margaritas at Baxter Mountain Tavern by 7:30.

For Andy "Kracken" this was #43w, with Allen, Redfield and Cliff remaining.
