Did this with a group from the ADK Winter Mountaineering School. There were 3 instructors and we took 11 students. This was the second day of hiking for the group.

We started from the Adirondack Loj and took the Old Marcy Dam Trail to Trail 64 - it comes out at the junction of Trail 61 and 64. There was decent snow cover and it was hard packed.

Once at the junction we took a right and proceeded on Trail 64 towards Whales Tail and Wright. The snow cover was good and hard packed. It got slightly less hard packed after the Wright Peak Ski Trail but still solid. After the waterfall there was one steep pitch that was solid ice. There were two options - the left was more gradual but the left had better hand holds. We went up in snowshoes and used crampons on the return trip.

The lower half of Trail 65 (spur to Wright) was full of soft snow. Snowshoes to treeline was the right choice. We switched to crampons at treeline and that was the right choice for the upper half - little snow, some thick ice, but mostly black ice. We put the crampons on right before the rock scramble section at treeline and kept them on until we returned to the icy steep pitch above the waterfall.
Reaching the summit is optional, getting down is mandatory. (Ed Viesturs)
