  • Nippletop & Dial 1-14-20

Seems counter productive to climb Nippletop and Dial the day after Colvin and Blake but thats the way it happened.

A dusting of snow went a long way to improve things. We walked to the Gill Brook cutoff in bare boots then changed to spikes. Conditions to the Elk pass are pretty good. Look out for icy steps but Long sections of good snow. We crossed over the frozen pond at the pass. Climb to Nippletop from Elk Pass was intermittently on pretty good snow and more icy steps. The snow on the ridge is very good from the summit to just about the last bump before making ascent to Dial. By then snow base was only inches and the trail icy. But it was all manageable in spikes. The most consistent ice was the slope from Bear Den to the col approaching the Burn. After that thin cover and ice but not too bad. Trip took about 7-1/2 hrs for 3 people. We crossed paths with two hikers nearing Nippletop Summit.

Counter-productive? You got to do two hikes instead of just one this way. :-)

I suppose that's one way of looking at it
