  • Cliff 12-7-18

Cliff has been tracked out. I climbed it 12-7. Took me two trips. First day to get to near Upphill Brook. No tracks yet from Feldspar Brook side. No tracks yet on west side of Lake Colden. Tracks on East side of Lake Colden appear to be blown in. The track up the Opalescent and to Cliff is soft as I'm the only climber recently. The snow is 2-3' deep on the ridge. This is a snowshoe route and spikes not useful.

Around the Cliff-Redfield junction I made two extra tracks, short, and toward Redfield in searching for the junction...sorry. I think the straight thru one will connect to Redfield path.

Yes, Upper Works to Herbert Brook is good with a 1/2 ft snow in the past week.

Path to Redfield is unbroken. I broke that out Dec 2017 and don't need in December again.

Hear the Footsteps - are you working on your 2nd grid?

Hear the Footsteps hoping to get Cliff on Friday, depending on the rain in the forecast. I don't think there has been significant snowfall since your trip. How did all the snow make getting up that tricky cliff section?

Over an inch of rain Thursday night through Friday....will be a mess...I'd wait 2 days for it to lock up...and bring spikes

I may need to alter the plan that's for sure, but rain is falling everywhere this week(Catskills, New Hampshire, Adirondacks) and I have that day off, but can't hike the weekend, so I've got to hike somewhere! :P

IMO opinion spikes are over rated. You said that before and the next I went I walked through a drifted in track. This isn't at all like the heavily used routes like for instance Cascade there is snow pack.

Spikes will just make lots of post holes. That's especially true if the temperatures are above freezing.

Give me my MSRs over spikes any day on Calamiy Brook and forward into the interior.

Snow was deep up the cliff. I took my usual route - avoiding the places people were widening the path. What I'd call the crux I made a ramp angling across-lately people had gone way right to avoid it. I never do that...go right up the middle.

Start early. It took 3 hrs from Uphill Brook for me to reach the summit. 2 hrs to top of ridge; 1 hr to cross ridge to the summit.

If rain allows, figuring for a 5 AM start. Thanks!
