  • 8/30 Dix Range w/o Dix

For the past few weeks, a neighbor of mine and myself have been trying to find a day to do the Dix Range together. Yesterday turned out to be the day where neither one of us had work or family responsibilities. We set out bright and early, reaching the empty Elk Lake parking lot at about 4:35 am. After getting ourselves ready, we signed in at 4:50 and hit the dark trail with headlamps on. The walk in on Hunters Pass was easy and relaxed. We turned off on the Slide Brook Trail, filled up on H2O, and put our headlamps away as the sky was starting to lighten.

We reached Macomb's slide about 6:40. My picture certainly doesn't do it justice. It was definitely a fun scramble up.

After reaching the top, I wished it was longer, but we definitely took our time going up trying to savor the moment.

Impending clouds were starting to come in from the west. I didn't bring along a rain coat, so I'm thinking things may get a little interesting.

After taking in the views and having a snack, we continued on towards Carson, where we arrived at 8:15.

Moving on, we arrived at Grace at 9am.

Macomb's summit now in the clouds with Carson just below them.

After some more summit time, we headed back to Carson, then off to Hough. Hough was still deep in the clouds. Up to this point, we only had a few light rain showers, but nothing terrible.

At 10:50, we arrived in the clouds on Hough. Not a view to be had in any direction. I really wanted a picture of Dix from Hough, but that'll have to wait for another day.

With Dix heavily in the clouds, we decided not to go there. I was just there last week, and my neighbor decided to do it from 73 on a clear day.

We made our way down the Lillian Brook, checked out the lean tos and tent sites at both Lillian Brook and Slide Brook, then finished to a full parking lot at 2:20.

        more random fungus

I think this was taken as we were approaching Hough.

Glad to see I am not the only one who stops to take mushroom pictures!

        Nice TR.
Judging from my pics and others that I have seen... The Morning Sun always seems to make it hard to get a shot of the slide.

I remember when I looked up the slide, I was looking right in to the sun the morning I was there. Not good for pictures.

Great trip....did it July 1 on a gorgeous day. Macomb slide is fun, for sure, and Lillian Brook was brutal for the first half....one steep descent.

Great post. Did same two summers ago, including saving Dix for another trip. Lillian Brook was a swamp in 2017! We had no views from top of slide, then blue skies on the next three. Went back for Dix from 73 few weeks later, into the clouds. Def will do Dix solo again, and also back to Macomb slide solo some day.

I found Lilian Brook trail to be lovely. We just did it in August and it was mostly dry. I could see that in the spring it would be EXTREMELY SOGGY!

Nice pics and trip. That slide sure has changed since I was there last [80s].
