  • Possibly hazards along Tahawus Road.

    Should you drive along Tahawus Road this week, keep an eye open for fallen debris and severed powerlines. Here's why:
    • On Sunday, November 13th, I noticed several locations along the length of Tahawus Road where branches and/or tree trunks had fallen onto the powerline. One notable case is located on the east side, about 2.5 miles north of Blue Ridge Road
    • ​On Saturday, November 19th, I noticed the same spot at 2.5 miles (the powerline is bearing the weight of the fallen tree and sags by about 6 feet) plus several others of lesser impact.
    ​The recent snowfall may have aggravated the problem and possibly have caused the weighted trees to snap the powerline and fall onto the road. Maybe. Be careful.

    Thanks, Taras. Do you know what utility operates the power lines there, and were you able to report these issues to the utility?

      No on both counts. On the 13th, after hiking the Santanonis, I paused at the intersection of Tahawus and Blue Ridge to wolf down a sandwich. I had just measured 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) from the downed tree to the intersection and wondered who would I report it to? It's not worthy of 911. While thinking and munching I see a state police cruiser turn the corner and head north on Tahawus. OK. Maybe the troopers will spot it and call it in. At the very least, the folks along Tahawus road, who use electricity, will certainly notice it and call it in. Anyhow, one week later and .... no change.

      ​In Québec, I can report outages to Hydro-Québec because they run the show for the entire province. They have a 1-800 number for all outages.

      ​I don't know how it works in New York. Does NYSEG run the show for the entire state? They have a 1-800 number but they say "If you are reporting a life-threatening electricity emergency, call us at 1.800.572.1131 or call 911." This isn't life-threatening ... but may pose a danger in the future.

        So the utility map of NY is a bit complicated:

        But the detailed map on NYSEG's site indicates that NYSEG covers the Town of Newcomb,so it would be NYSEG in this case:

        It doesn't appear that NYSEG has a contact number specifically for electrical line issues, but you might try the general contact...

          Neat. I've never seen that map before. There's a couple of missing utility companies, but they're small enough to the point where they'd barely show up on this map.

        I've usually had good luck with calling the town offices for whatever town the power line issue is in. They usually offer to forward the information to the correct power company. Figuring out what town you're in can be a challenge, but the Delorme Atlas is good for this- it shows the town boundary lines (hiking and road maps often do not).

          Calling 911 and reporting a down line will probably work too.

            Tahawus Road just makes it into an irregularly shaped service area. Currently, there are no reported outages in northern New York so I guess my concerns for Tahawus Road are either unwarranted or the other shoe hasn't dropped yet.

            ​I called NYSEG's 1-800 number and none of the three options fit the situation I described (potential electrical failure):
            ​1) Life-threatening electrical emergency.
            ​2) Report loss of electricity.
            3) Streetlight burnt out.
            I tried "0" but it doesn't work.

            ​... and that's the end of my involvement with this.

              With automated menu systems on company phone lines, I've had good luck getting a human being via one of the following methods:
              • Randomly mashing buttons on the key pad- most of these automated systems are set up to transfer you to a human if they aren't sure what function you're trying to access.
              • Swearing vigorously into the phone- some of the more advanced systems (the ones that use voice recognition to access the various menus) are set up to identify certain key words that indicate frustration, and again will transfer you to a human being if they detect this.
