  • Weekly Photo Theme: Tree Growths/Burls

Occasionally we come across an interesting looking growth on a tree. These "burls" formed due to some stress on the tree (disease, fungus etc.). They come in different shapes and sizes and are prized by woodworkers for creating unique pieces that fetch high prices. Sometimes trees are shaped distinctively by their habitat (high winds, elevation, terrain etc.) which makes us understand better the physical pressures of life in the wild. Feel free to post any interesting tree features (burls, deformities, shapes etc.) photos. Enjoy the pics!

PS- Since people have been posting regularly so that folks have time to find photos I'll add the upcoming weeks' theme.

"We are now in the mountains and they are in us, kindling enthusiasm, making every nerve quiver, filling every pore and cell of us. Our flesh and bone tabernacle seems transparent as glass to the beauty about us, as if truly an inseparable part of it, thrilling with the air and trees, streams and rocks, in the waves of the sun, a part of all nature, neither old nor young, sick nor well, but immortal." Those maple and cherry trees with the big burls are like gold to a wood turner! As long as they're solid.
