  • 'Into the Wild' bus removed from Alaska trail for safety concerns

It's about time. But... the site of the bus will still be a pilgrimage site so I don't think its removal will discourage 100% of the folks from making the (sometimes dangerous) trek. But I suppose reducing some of the foot traffic is better than none.

How often does anything work 100%? I sort of get the value of human life angle, and how it's precious and everything but I've always found it astounding that people get all the way to Alaska and manage to get stranded and dead by the same river that got McCandless stranded and ultimately dead. Did they even read the book before deciding this had to be their next IG?

Actually thinking now, with no bus for selfies this might keep 100% of the tourists from heading out there.

So one of the biggest problem technologies is the camera? Should have known this, I suppose.

Bragging, looking cool, getting laid, eating. . .why else do people do things? I'm probably remembering the details wrong, but I think Steve House talking about his I think 2005 ascent of the Rupal Face on Nanga Parbat said something like: 'We're fast and light with no spares or backups. . . except for the camera. Nothing matters without photographs these days.' Sir Hillary was fine without a photo of him at the top. It's fun to think about.
