Because society has been conditioned to see how they can gain financially or politically from everything.

Everything revolves around gain, even tragedy and life and death.

          It's the "ME" generation.

What's interesting is that the congressman from Brooklyn is also talking about a "wrongful death" suit and my understanding is that it's a civil suit that can only be filed by a member of the family or someone who suffers loss.

We've vented, offered opinions and have not been apathetic about all that's happening like most of society.

We're concerned and passionate about not letting something tragic be used to force upon us something that is not necessary.

Maybe a couple of people will even had written to their congress people and told them exactly how they feel. I know I have.

Perhaps the example will cause other people to get invoved in advocacy.

So that's what has been gained.

What many of us have become are people who stand by and watch things happen that are negative to our future and say nothing.

What threads like this do is give people a platform to speak out and educate people that you can foster change but you have to speak out.

isn't that what newspapers, news stations, and news websites are for?
here on this hiking website we're talking about car accidents on highways and cell towers that might have prevented it.what would be the outcome if the guy hit the cell tower on the highway and died?? should they sue because there was no guardrail?? or if there was one that "it" caused the car to flip over? this thread is nothing more than headlining irrelevent news in relation to this site. it's like when they cut into the news to show you there's a car chase going on somewhere in L.A.

                    Well whaddya know.
The forum also serves as a platform where discussions involving backcountry regulations and legislative and ecological concerns pertaining to the Adirondack Park are encouraged.
Agreed about discussing cell towers along the Northway. Especially since they would be seen from some of the high peaks.

The tradgedy has served to catalyze a discussion about the cell towers. Fine.

Whether or not someone should sue someone else over this and who they should or shouldn't sue is beyond the scope of my interest.

The name of this thread is "Misc tidbits (which this comes under) and fun stuff" There are several other sections for hiking.

What this is about, is cell towers in the Adirondack park and more "civilized encroachments" so whether you realize it or not, long term it affects all of us who venture into the Adirondacks.

Finally, I'll pass on to you something that was passed onto me a long time ago, If there is something on a forum that i don't want to read, i simply do not click on the thread.

In that way, i am not offended and others who may in fact be interested in the topic are free to discuss it.

There are many threads on this and other forums that I am not interested in. I couldn't tell you what their content is, because I don't read them. Nor do I complain about them because I think that people have a right to discus things that don't concern me.

Sometimes there are people whose comments I never care for, I put them on my ignore list. that way they are free to express their opinion and I don't have to deal with it.

The difference between this and thenetworks cuting into a show is that you don't have to read this thread, it's not forced on you. You are reading it by your own choice.

So, if you don't like the content, don't click on the thread!

However, the possibility that the reason for the lawsuit might be to pressure the APA into changing the rules or to slant public opinion in the direction of the cell phone companies make it part of the equation.

My statement about "That's who should be sued" was a direct contradiction to the people saying the APA should be sued and forced to allow the towers under the cell phone company's standards.

p.s. the subject title isn't "cell phone towers slated for the northway and adirondack park" it's wrongful death suit filed in traffic accident on the northway.

There is 200+ post thread on another board with the same flavor/air as this.
To use a person’s death/misfortune as a catalyst for discussion of issues that are irrelevant to that misfortune is bothersome.
Maybe, it would bother the friends and family of the victims as well. (If they were to read this thread) IYKWIM

I was up there yesterday hiking and was listening to one of the local radio shows on the way there in my car. The topic was this very incident. From what the callers had to say about it, they all want cell phone coverage up there. It was very one sided, and I listened for over an hour. They were all talking about how well the companies are able to blend the towers in with nature. I am a new yorker, but not an adirondacker. I have been travelling there very often since 1980. What does that have to do with this...I don't know. But I sure hope the towers are not built. I like getting out there without a net. It's hard to get somewhere for me where I don't have cell coverage.

I think the mistake was made 50+/- years ago when the planned route for the Northway (I87) was changed from a route closer to the eastern border of NYS to its current route to make it more scenic.
