This is November?
Took a walk today. What a lovely summer day. Oh wait it's November. It gets dark kinda early? Charlene and I as well as Eric, his wife Sue, her sister Beth, and her boyfriend Andy, (got all that?) climbed Algonquin and Iroquois today. Eric, Andy, and I did the same hike in January, today was a little different. It was warm right from the start. The leave were actually crunchy and the sun was shining. As we climbed we ran into mud, water, slush, snow, rock, back to snow, mud, ... you get the point. We didn't bring snowshoes as we didn't want to carry them and we were willing to turn back if it got deep. We never needed them so that turned out to be a good decision. Lots of people on Algonquin as usual and of course quite the variety of hiking gear (full winter to sneakers and shorts). Only a few people returning from Iroquois when we went over so we ended up with that summit to ourselves. By this time clouds had rolled in. It was chilly on the summits but not as cold as most November days. What was left of the snow was melting fast and there was a lot of water. It was standing on the Iroquois path (lovely) and running down the Algonquin trail. Great views all day. Got back to the cars just as it was getting dark. These peaks made #29 and 30 of 46 for Charlene on the list she isn't working on!

Yeah, it has been known to happen before. My first Adirondack hike was November 9, 1975 (both Jaws and Armstrong). It hit 70 degrees that day in the Adirondacks. I had planned to do Gothics and Sawteeth also, but the sunlight was too short. That was before the age of headlamps. I remember just getting back to the Route 73 parking lot as it became pitch black.
Sounds like Charlene is now an official aspirant on that list she is not working on. |

Weird weather alright!
We climbed Cascade on Sunday and ran into 18" of snow. I climbed Rooster Comb and LWJ on Monday, only 12" of snow. So, 2 days later, I decide that the Ridge Trail to Giant will be even less as it's been melting every day and bail the s.shoes. Wrong: over 3' in places! Yes, weird weather alright but my oil tank loves it!

That sounds like a fantastic non-plan. Good Luck! What does ELL get for a night anyway?
