Mt St Helens

As there is not much going on today I though I'd throw up a few pictures of our climb of Mt St Helens a few years ago. If anything can go wrong it will and on the way to the climb my trusted slr died and we had to rely on my buddy's camcorder. Now then these pics came from (VHS of all things) tape. They are not what I'd like but not totally bad. How often do you get to climb St Helens? So we did the best we could at least the tape is fun to watch.

How often can you climb Mt St. Helens?

Well, not anymore at least now, the crater rim and surrounding trails have been closed since I think May'05 since it's been spewing sulfer gases on and off from the caldera. A bunch of us went to hike there after Rainier in early August and there were signs already there and on the trails about the closures, we hiked to Harry's Lookout and back that day, getting nowhere near the crater itself but having good views of Spirit Lake, Mt Adams, and of course, MSH.

How often? just once we had permits and were "weathered" out twice. Finally did it in 95. Now they charge for the permits BTW. We have hiked most of the summits around it. Harry's ridge, several unnamed peaks in Independence Pass above Spirit Lake, Mt Margaret and Goat Mt near Ryan Lake. Did most of the Boundry Trail though the thing is not completed. With present conditions it is not likely to be completed for awhile. The forest service said there is no accurate trail map of the area. They were working on one.
