Trail Crew - New section of Long Path on Romer Mountain

Just wanted to make everyone aware that we have begun to work on the new section of the Long Path over Romer Mountain, Cross Mountain and Mount Pleasant near Phoenicia! The new trail will take the Long Path off its last major road walk in the Catskills and will provide a connection from the Phoenicia area to Terrace Mountain.

The Trail Crew started to work along the first 2 miles of new trail where we climb Romer Mountain (Pictures on our Facebook Page). More clearing in the future along with opportunities for trail construction (sidehilling, rock work, waterbars and more) is coming. There will be plenty of opportunities to get involved and help build this new trail.

Upcoming work dates are:
June 23rd and 30th
July 8th, 9th, 14th, 20th, 21st and 29th of July.
Work trip details are available on our calendar here: http://nynjtc.org/view/trail-crew-outings

We will also be holding Trail University courses on the mountain to develop rock and tread building skills! These courses will be scheduled later this summer.

Trail Crews are open to the public and you do not need to be a member of the Trail Conference to take part in the work. No experience is necessary either, we'll make sure you are properly trained and get your hands dirty out on this new trail!

Andy Garrison, our Long Path Co-Chair is organizing the work trips and can be contacted at srtmaintainer@gmail.com or you can contact me with any questions.

We are hoping to at least have a portion of this 7 miles of new trail open this fall.

Hope to see you out on a trail crew!
Jeff

Any chance at some Tuesday/Wednesday work dates? Weekends don't work for me...

I'm very excited about this- I've been eagerly awaiting the construction of this trail since I saw the planned route years ago on the NYNJTC maps.

We've got a Monday and a Friday date planned so far and I think as we go along there will be more weekday dates.

Very excited to see this route being created. I grew up in Wittenberg Valley (hence my username) looking out at the sun setting behind Mt. Pleasant and Wittenberg and Cornell rising above. Too bad I'm moving away to Montana! I'll be back to hike it eventually....... eventually...

I hope to join you on a work date, but I'm not sure which yet. I'll be in touch.

Additional dates for trail work on Romer Mountain

Work continues on the construction of the Long Path up Romer Mountain near Phoenicia. This first section is about 2.5 miles long and has already been cleared from top to bottom. The Trail Crew is now working on sidehilling, waterbar construction, stone steps and other trail improvements throughout this first section.

Work trips dates include:

Saturday, July 14th, 2012 - 9:00am - 4:00pm
Friday, July 20th, 2012 - 9:00am - 4:00pm
Saturday, July 21st, 2012 - 9:00am - 4:00pm
Sunday, July 29th, 2012 - 9:00am - 4:00pm
Sunday, August 26, 2012 - – 9:00am – 4:00pm

All of our trail crew trips are on our calendar, which will be updated as we add additional dates - http://www.nynjtc.org/view/trail-crew-outings

No experience is necessary and the public is welcome to attend (you do not need to be a Trail Conference member to be on a trail crew). Just make sure you wear good hiking boots, bring a bag lunch and plenty of water and if you have any tools such as shovels, hoes, rakes or picks, bring them, but we also have tools that we can provide when you get there.

Due to limited parking at the future trailhead, we meet at the parking area located at the intersection of High Street and Woodland Valley Road (on the western side of the Esopus River) in Phoenicia. Please meet at this parking lot by 9am, at which time we will carpool to the work area. Work trips generally last till about 3 in the afternoon.

Andy Garrison, the Trail Conference's Long Path Co-Chair is organizing this crew, if you have any questions or would like more information, please contact via email at srtmaintainer@gmail.com or by phone at (845) 866-7201 .

When this first section of trail is complete, we will begin work on the trail section that goes from the top of Romer Mountain to the Terrace Mountain trail via the ridge with Mount Pleasant and Cross Mountain.

You can also send any questions my way and I would be happy to help.

Jeff
