Allen 5/12

The Hudson crossing was knee to mid-thigh deep. No issues. Someone has done some nice work on the Lake Jimmy crossing so it is now passable. Expect your boots will get wet. The Opalescent crossing is shin to knee-deep. Also no issues. The trail and herd path are not particularly muddy given the time of year and last week's rains. There are still a few bits of ice and snow on the mountain but nothing that affected travel in any way so no special gear needed.

My first time back up there since 1989. It's comforting to know the red slime is timeless.

Nothing to dread; it's a great mountain. Certainly a big day but it's beautiful country.

If you really find the river crossings daunting (they're not a very big deal, especially in dryer weather), keep a few things in mind. The bridge over the Hudson should be back in commission at some point. That means only crossing the Opalescent. In dryer weather it may only be ankle to shin deep.

If you just want to avoid them completely, consider packing in to Flowed Land. Camp there and do it as a day trip taking the trail down past Hanging Spear Falls. Camp another night at Flowed Land then head out. No river crossings. I did it that way a few times. It's a bigger time commitment, but also a fine route.

Enjoy.
