Berkshire Bucket List

Checked off another destination today in the Berkshire bucket list... the Ice Glen in Stockbridge... I've been to Laura's tower probably around 11 years ago when a friend and I biked to Great Barrington from NJ and camped at Beartown SF. We did day trips to places like Hancock Shaker Village and did short hikes like Laura's Tower, but we didn't go over to the ice glen cause of my friend has bad ankles so I figured the ice glen is probably kind of hard for him. So today, met up with Sureno to hike the Ice Glen, Laura's tower and the Mary Flynn trail which wasn't there when I was last there... We did a loop that Sureno knows about by walking out back to rt 7 and crossing the Housatonic by the boat launch and past the Stockbridge trail depot over to Ice Glen road.. then through the glen and towards the Tower. I remember the trees not being that tall but we had views towards greylock, stockbridge itself, Kripalu and stockbridge bown.. And Yokum Ridge..

Even saw a Housatonic RR train whiz by...

These is no ice in the ice glen! :-)

The above has a trail map of the area in the "references' link to the PDF file

Some photos from our hike

as well as a video of the train and a map of the Laurel Hill Association trails for anyone who might visit (generated by overlaying the track from my GPS over the 7.5 min. topo layer on the National Map Viewer).

Jay, flummoxed by the Mary Flynn Trail.

A long wait for a train that don’t come.

Jay isn’t staying behind the yellow line, doh!

To the Ice Glen!

Mount Greylock from Lauras Tower.

Light and shadow on the Taconics.

On Laurel Hill.

Very nice Gentlemen! Sorry to say, the Berkshire Scenic Railroad is not going to be stopping at that train station anymore! http://www.berkshireeagle.com/ci_204...shireeagle.com
Its been about 5 years since going to Laura's Tower, but It looks like the Laurel Hill Assoc. needs to wack some of those trees down. Jay, Im sure you looked at the Konkapot Brook near the station, and put that on your to-do list?

Well yeah, we walked right by the canoe access on Park St. I believe the Konkapot can be accesses from the Housatonic between the Park st launch and Glenville Dam access further west (or river south)... Some pretty fancy houses can be seen from Laura's tower and on Ice Glen Road!

I was up here I think in 2001 and climbed the tower then in the late october time frame and yeah, I do remember the Tower being more clear of the trees. In fact, the catskills are impossible to see through the growth and any points south of the tower. The only somewhat clear views are towards Greylock and NW to perhaps Becket...

Maybe they need to raise the tower :-)

No, you cant get up the mouth of the Konk from the river. Put in right at the bridge over the brook on Rt 7, or on Goodrich St, next to Rt 7!

Other Berkshire stops

Jay, I'm guessing you've been up Monument Mountain in GB, and Race Brook in Sheffield if not consider them. Monument Mountain gets busy but it's still worth doing.

Yes, I've redlined Monument Mtn last year and I have done Race and Everett before I even lived here... Those two are great peaks and have multiple approaches..

I've camped at Sages Ravine before and have hiked up the ravine itself which was somewhat of a herdpath when I did it.
