3/30 ND and Sherrill

Perfect day for a bushwhack. No bugs, not hot, not cold, just right. dusting of snow in the top 10 feet of both peaks. No big deal.

The big deal is a few weeks ago I posted that I had gotten to the ND can and found it wrapped in reflective tape.
Attachment 893

I peeled it off and went on with my life. I went back yesterday and found this geocache box under the summit rock.

What do ya know, it has the same tape on it. There was a bunch of useless crap inside (typical geocache) but also seemed to be a memorial to someone. There was a story in a notebook that I quickly glanced at and an old photo. If anyone knows who put the box there, kindly explain to them the problem with the reflective tape...and having a box under the summit rock.

On a side note, I never really noticed the benchmarks on ND before (I'm always there in the snow) The obvious one is at the summit
Attachment 891 Attachment 892
but there is also a reference mark that says no. 2 a few feet away. Is there a no. 1 that anyone knows about or did it go the way of the Westkill sign????

I also saw more junk down near the col than I ever have before, A BBQ grate and some corrugated roofing????

One last thing, there was a fire ring with burnt logs near the summit of ND but I don't remember HVH having a trip up there recently

I found the page for this cache on geocaching.com and have emailed its owner. I asked if he or she has received permission from the DEC to place a cache in this area. (I'm assuming that is ok to place a cache in the Catskills hiking areas as long as there is permission from DEC because there are at least ten to fifteen throughout the area that I can remember).

I'll post a reply if I hear something.

I contacted the cache owner and she wants to make sure that her cache isn't violating any DEC guidelines. If it is, she's willing to make changes to its location. Does anyone know if there's a legitimate issue with this cache's location? She thought it was located at least .15 miles from the summit.

It may have been, as I did not see it back in Jan (very little snow) or Feb (more snow). As of now it is 5 feet from the canister, under the boulder with the benchmark. She might want to take a trip back up there to relocate it. I don't care much about the cache, its the reflective tape that gets me.

There is a small cache in the col between Sherrill and North Dome hanging in a small tree.Near that same col there is a pot belly stove with a antique tea pot sitting on it in a ledge.

After looking into this, I don't think the container near the summit of ND anything to do with the true geocache that was placed on the mountain. As Hermit mentioned, there is a cache in the col. Coincidentally, this seems to be an additional container that has been placed on the mountain by someone else.

When I was up on ND in Feb, I think, I saw that geocache in the ammo box at the summit of North Dome and couldn't quite figure out what it was. I tried to pull it out of the ice to pack it out and throw it away - it sure looked like garbage! It was thoroughly iced in and I couldn't free it so I left it there. Saw it again on Friday (along with a glimpse of Mike S as he flew down the east slope of Sherrill!) and thought someone should probably ask the right people about placing it there. I was going to ask Mudhook because whether or not he'd know, I'd certainly get an entertaining answer.

Without consulting a map, I think you can have geocaches on state land, but not in Wilderness areas, correct?
