Anyone know what happened to "Adirondack Journey"?

This is one of my go-to websites for a quick down and dirty of what to expect on a hike. Anyone know where it went? I keep getting an error message!

I think I was still able to access it about a week or two ago. No clue as to why it's down now.

I just tried it. It's the message you get when a site host has removed the domain pointer. Looks like it's gone.

Darn. That is sad news! Always looked to the site for the great pictures and descriptions.

I printed off all the guides last year when I started hiking the High Peaks in anticipation of the site being shut down. The various guides weren't being updated and I would imagine that played some part in the decision to call it a day. Al

Perhaps we could contact the host and see if we could get the website mirrored someplace else? Maybe the ADKHighPeaks foundation would be willing to host it?

We made the offer after he died, and they did want to keep in house. We have a lot on our plate right now and probably not feasible at this point. His widow has my address and certainly could have reached out if they were interested in keeping it going. The fact that they did not, it probably telling that they just did not want to have it carry on.

We'll all have to respect that. It certainly was a great resource for many years.

Point taken, Neil. I removed my post. Suffice it to say, there are cached sites out there that can can give some folks a last opportunity to print out and save this valuable source of info.

So sad. That was one of the first sites we found when we started this questing behavior, and it helped us immensely in those first years.

Thumbs up

Not to dig up an older thread .. but I just started planning my 3rd ADK backpacking trip (June 2012) and THE first web site i always type in is the Adirondack Journey site, and now it's gone : - (

This guy had THE best trail descriptions. Most trail descriptions out on the web are like "This trail is steep" or "Moderate to Easy". He actually described every damn inch of the trails and put in all that info about boulders, tree roots, side hikes, best views, etc. Absolutely amazing. When you look at the trail maps you think "Eh it's only 1.5 miles from A to B, that'll take 20 minutes" .. UNTIL you check his trail description and see his notes that he muttered more 4 letter words in that 1.5 miles than in all his previous trips combined. Re-Route !! I love his tips about what direction to traverse certain areas/ranges as well, so for example you hit the tricky climbs earlier in the day when you are fresh -- hard to plan this out from a topo map because you can only tell the elevation gain, NOT the condition of the trail.

You can get to it from the Way Back Machine online. Type in the original URL and hit "Take Me Back". I actually captured a copy of the entire site to my PC using ScrapBook plugin for FireFox, and going down 2 levels into the site.

Invaluable resource that i hope lives on forever.

Adirondack Journey got me started on hiking the 46. It was a great site to start with. In fact, Joel was his name, I think, made me take pics of the trails that I hiked, so if anyone needed recon photos, I had them. Also for my own reference as well. It is sad he is gone and that any future 46r will not have the chance to come across this site by mistake as I did.
