Indian Head & Twin – A Perfect Winter Day Hike – February 20, 2011
After a brutal windy Winter day on Saturday the Catskill weather gods decided to give us a break providing a perfectly clear day for a Winter hike on Sunday up to the summits of Indian Head & Twin mountains.
Doug (Sparty) and I arrived at the Prediger Road PA about mid morning. The temperature was 9 degrees and there was a stiff cold wind blowing. We headed up the trail to Jimmy Dolan Notch. Even though we had high winds the day before this trail had a solid base with very little snow covering. At the notch we quickly made our way up to the summit of Indian Head. This trail was in great condition. There is a small iced over cliff area to negotiate right near the summit. We returned to Jimmy Dolan Notch for a quick snack break and headed forTwin. The trail up to Twin is steep but for the most part it was packed with only a small amount of new snow blown over it. There are several places where it has iced over covered by a small layer of packed snow. The use of snowshoes with good crampons or microspikes is recommended to prevent slipping in the steep sections. Our reward this day was some of the most fantastic Winter views from the summits of Twin. There was a great view of the Hudson River valley to the east and to the north the mountains of Roundtop & Kaaterskill and beyond them the Blackhead Range. In the far distance we could even see the faint outline of the fire tower on Hunter Mountain. What a truly wonderful day to be out on a mountain hike in the Catskills. I see you are staying busy. The views from Twin are outstanding as you experienced.
