Dix - 10/9
I'll keep this one short. I climbed Dix from Rt 73. The trail is dry and in good shape. There are plenty of leaves covering
the trail, but it's not hard to follow. I went up the slide, which had running water covering maybe 50% at the bottom, but there were enough dry options to choose from. I went up the thumb (depending on which way you look at it, staying to the left as you go up). Around 60% of the way up, the running water turned to ice, but there was still a lot of dry rock. Around 80% of the way up, ice was covering almost all of the rock, so I went into the woods and bushwhacked to the trail. The summit wind made things very cold. There were a handful people on the summit and many more headed up from Rt 73. As I hiked out, there were a lot of people headed into lean-to/campsites, who were planning on climbing Dix on Sunday. ![]() ![]()

awesome, just curious, what's the advantage of going in through rt. 73? Doesn't it make the trip longer, or is that just if you do all 5 of them?

Not really any advantage from going in from 73 unless you're just planning for Dix. All 5 are doable from 73, but it's a lot longer of a trip from there as opposed to doing all 5 from Elk Lake.

There's probably not any advantage to going in from Rt 73. The Elk Lake trail-head is closed during hunting season though.

Very nice pics. Yes, very windy, wasn't it? Wonderful views from Dix.

Thanks. Once you were out of the wind, the sun was great. I stopped on the slide on the way down and sat in the sun for a while. It felt like a mid-summer day.
