Marcy Dam 2-25-10

With the impending snowstorm, my plan of getting some action in the Sewards was thwarted for Thursday. So we set our sights on something a little smaller....

Under cloudy skies and light snow the whole way up, Lee and I knew that picking Marcy Dam was a good idea because we had been there before and whether or not there were views of Colden we had seen them already. Bob had agreed to meet us and see if he could keep up with some young kids

Got under way around 7:30 a.m. as we wanted to make sure we had enough time to get out before dark as I planned on preparing a three course meal at the dam. Snow was heavy on the way in, and light flurries melted on contact on our sweaty faces as it was a tad warm on Thursday. Once we got to the dam we really were not all that hungry so we decided to push on to the high water bridge and look at some water. Once again we made great time, and we all thanked Bob's gps for telling us so. Lee and I liked his Garmin so much that I had purchased one online a few days before and Lee got one today .

At the junction we felt like we still had some gas in the tank so we plowed on towards Lee and Siobhans' adopted trail, the Tabletop herdpath. Not having brought in any blowdown removal equipment, we were worried about going up because it was almost 9 a.m. and those two still wanted to have me cook. I coaxed them to go for it and before we knew it we were taking pictures in front of a summit sign and disc. Cool!!! Turns out Bob needed this for his "W" and now only had nine left to go! Go Bob go!!!

Quick descent and I don't know what got into those two, but they realized I needed Phelps for my "W", and so I took charge and broke out Phelps most of the way up. I don't remember it being that steep; and out of nowhere it got cold, windy and started to act like winter. We wandered around and fell in a few traps, but found our way out to the summit outlook eventually. Took pictures for about thirty seconds as the ice pellets were flying in from the side and it was a little painful, as the photos will show. Lee broke out a shortcut and got us back to our path of ascent in no time. Back down we went and once we got to Marcy Dam, we noticed we forgot the fuel for the stove. And the stove. And anything to cook on the stove. Shucks :(

So we made our way back to the lot, and noticed many people had come in after us and none had the pleasure of following in our broken out footsteps. We were all very pleased that we decided to do just a little bit more than going to the dam, I suggest it if you have the time. Mostly Macintyre bound and a few to the dam. Another great day with two great friends! I owe you both dinner, and Siobhan for putting up with our antics the night before. So happy to be a winter 12er!!!!

C'mon Keith, at this stage in the game I figured you would want to do all of your own breaking and "earn" your W

Wow, It sure was a great day to play in the snow. Just another example of how each trip back to trail or summit that you may have visited so many times before can offer up a grand new challenge, and a different flavor for your hiking enjoyment. Thanks again Lee and Dave for your willingness to drag this old guy along on your adventures.

Please enjoy a perspective through my camera lens...

It's not the breaking; it's that I just wanted you in there ahead of me so I could taste your cooking skills. A hot meal on a summit would be fantastic:>) And, yes, a nice chilled bottle of wine with the meal would really hit the spot!

Awesome job and decision about not trekking into the Sewards. I was thinking about you all day, glad you had a great time and got two for the W but even if you didn't get any summits....sounds like the day would have been great with your company you had

Summits were bonuses

Way to go!

Nice job guys . And great pictures. I love the one of the HPIC in the afternoon - I've seen it busier in the middle of the night.

Let me know when you're planning your big summit cook-out. I'll have to make a reservation and pop in. My usual cliff bars and candy routine is getting old...

It probably won't be on a summit, but if next week goes according to plan it will be on March 20th somewhere near Whiteface for my first round finish Anyone is welcome to join for the hike and/or the food; will keep y'all posted after next week's vacation from work....certainly not from hiking!
