Highest Water Source on Marcy

Coming in from the Garden. I think if I'm remembering my map correctly the highest source is near Slant Rock? Is that correct? If so, is it a viable source for refills right now? I'd look to filter just before heading up Marcy/Haystack.

Depends on the weather and how desperate you are. There are two potential sources onthe summit itself. If it's raining just open your mouth. If it has rained recently, depressions in rocks contain water (people think you're kissing the ground when you drink from these.

On the last mile to the summit, you can find a number of small seeps.

In June I've gotten water from the same brook at Slant Rock at a little higher elevation.

There's also a smaller brook that comes into it from the right (as your climbing) -- this one also has a small cascade that's worth a look. It's only seconds off the trail.

If you drink from the depressions on the summit is it safe to drink without filtering

One thing to keep in mind if you do this... the number of people who have carried the ashes of their dearly departed to the summit to scatter.

If you look in the cracks and crevices on the summit of Marcy, it's not hard to find bone fragments.

Completely true. There's one particular crack where Pete Fish deposited some of the ashes of a friend of his... He likes to stop, bend over, and say hello every time he's up there...

I'll keep that in mind for emergencies. Hoping to manage intake/replen well enough to avoid being desperate.

Not all that surprising I guess. There are a few places I'd like to be buried or spread out when my time comes. ADKs or Rocky Mountian National Park is basically my short list. I'm not sure I'd pick Marcy though... We'll see after tomorrow!

I would imagine that the ashes would be just about the most sterile thing dropped on Marcy. God only knows what the fish, bears and beavers do in the water we normally drink from. Al

I filter regardless. Having had a bout with ecoli h0157 in the past a serious stomach virus is not something I want to repeat.

i've filtered out of the alpine bog on marcy...not exactly sure if that's above the junction with the garden trail or whether it's just a notch down on the vanho trail.

The bog was pretty dry. The stream at slant rock was my refill location of choice prior to the summit, I got back to the johns brook crossing on the way down. There are probably 2-3 good running streams above slant rock right now, but they are within about .5 miles so you may as well stop at slant.

On another note: Marcy from the garden is a freaking haul. Also - I hate my boots. I skipped Haystack cause my feet were killing me!

Beautiful day today, spent it alone until I reached the summit. Weekdays are awesome!
