Meadowbrook

My wife and I (and our two dogs) are coming up to Lake Placid in mid August. Since I won't be backpacking we decided to stay at the Meadowbrook Campground in Lake Placid. How is this place? I ask because very few people seem to use it, and at $18 per night I would think it would be full. While few people makes for a better experience, I hope it isn't because the place leaves a lot to be desired.

It's not exactly a wilderness or even a primitive experience. There is very little setback from the highway, and you've got the tail of the pup BBQ joint right next door... which I believe will often have life music on weekend nights. (The food there is ok, not great.)

If you want peace and quiet, it's probably worth it to stay elsewhere- Rollins Pond or Meacham Lake or Buck Pond would be good options. They are a bit of a drive from Placid, but still close enough that you can head into the Placid/Saranac Lake area for the day, then return to your campsite at night without too much driving.

I've always wondered why people would even want to stay at Meadowbrook. Just my opinion though.

Thanks for the info. Personally my wife and I have eaten at the Tail twice and hated it, and to have it in our tent's backyard would suck. I knew it was close, but not that close. Cascade Inn only costs $60 a night and dogs are free, so we might just go that route. I only wish the Inn had beer on tap!!

I think it gets a fair amount of use by the peak-bagging crowd... folks looking to climb high peaks, who want to camp less primitively with a few more amenities than backpacking would provide, but also aren't willing to pay more for a hotel room. Basically just a cheap place to car camp while you work on the 46.

I've stayed at that campground a few times. There's nothing wrong with it, but don't stay there if you want to rest up for an early hike the next day--the music will make that impossible. I'd rather snag a spot at South Meadows, and if it's needed pay a quarter for the shower at the HPIC, which is more than adequate, though a bit of a walk from the campsites.

Because there is adequate food and cold draft beer just a walk around the fence. Clearly it is not a wilderness setting but no state campground is. Jus as clearly Mr. "D" is correct in saying it's a great place for peak badgers. I stayed there the night before and the night after hiking the Sewards. I was delighted after the hike to get a shower and walk around and be served my dinner and some cold Long Trail Ales.
