Lodging nearest Upper Works
We are planning a couple of long hikes (Allen and Marshall), beginning near Upper Works, and are looking for a place to stay. It appears that the closest places are about an hour away (Long Lake, Schroon Lake, and Keene Valley). I understand that now that Aunt Polly's is closed, there is nothing in Newcomb, althouth my information may be out of date. We plan to drive up from Long Island May 23, do Allen May 24 (and return to the lodging), and then do Marshall May 25. We then plan to go to Keene Valley and join the Long Island chapter in their annual trail maintenance of the Brothers Trail on May 26. I am leaning toward Long Lake, because of the availability of meals.
Other possibilities are to camp (where are there legal places?) or maybe rent an RV and stay in the parking lot (is that legal?). Thanks for any suggestions.

Exit 28 of the Northway... Maple Leaf Inn... Across the road from the Mount Severance General Store... inexpensive, great hot water and close to Mr. P's!! Less than ten minutes to exit 29.

North Creek has a nice lodge and a nice hotel but if you are staying for two or more nights you may want to rent a condo there, it is off season and the rates are pretty low. There are several nice restaurants and a grocery store there as well. We use N. Creek as our base for all our HPs adventures.

Panther Mountain Inn re-opened last year in Chestertown. It's pretty nice (we go once a year) and pretty close to UW.

If you decide to stay there at some point I would be glad to provide recommendations including local hikes. BTW - for you NYC dwellers, you may be able to get the train all the way up from the city to NC.

Black Mountain Lodge is run by Marian and Kip, great people. Good restaurant and bar.
In town the Copperfield inn is supposed to be a nice hotel, may be pricey. I have heard nice things about the Adirondack Alpine Lodge, the rooms are very nice and it is right in the middle of town within walking distance to the train station and a few restaurants. In town we eat at Andy's, not gourmet but nice people. Also there is a wine bar, Bar Vino - good food but small portions. There is also a Pizza place across the street - Pete's Ahh. Hiking in the area includes Crane Mountain, Peaked Peak on 13th lake and the whole of the Siamese Ponds Wilderness area. There is also rafting on the river in the summer. Enjoy - we certainly love it.

There is the Cloudsplitter in Newcomb. I've stayed there several times and found the accomodations to be fine. I believe they also have a couple of cabins in back that they rent out to larger groups.

+1 for PhotoBug's suggestion. Inexpensive, clean, well-appointed room within walking distance of a convenience store. MrPsMountainSmokehouse is a short drive away in the town of Schroon Lake where you'll also find a Grand Union. Maple Leaf Inn is about a 10 minute drive south of exit 29 so it isn't out of the way for folks like myself who arrive from the north.
Aunt Polly's is closed? Darn. I was hoping to go there this summer. You'll be hard pressed to find anything closer to the UW trailhead than the Maple Leaf Inn (unless you stay in Newcomb). I think there is one more motel along route 9, whose name escapes me, closer to exit 29 but I never stayed there. I believe there is a campground along Boreas Road (Blue Ridge) that puts you closer to the trailhead. Being a private campground they may offer hot showers. There's also the public campground at Newcomb Lake. I have not stayed at either of these campgrounds so I can't comment on the quality of their facilities. Oh and thumbs up for Mr. P's! |

The state campground, Lake Harris, opens May 18. 518 582-2503. Nice, reasonable and hot showers.
There is also a private campground in Newcomb, Cedar Pond. 518 582-3731 There is a diner, convenience store and they have gas. The only time I stayed there a few years ago it was a bit dumpy, but there are new owners so things may have changed. teejay

Aunt Pollys Bed and Breakfast is closed, but I think the home next door called "The Annex" is still available thru the original owners of Aunt Pollys. Myself and some friends stayed at The Annex this past winter . At that time the same nice couple that had owned the Bed and Breakfast still owned the Annex.
Do you guys have more recent info? |

Maggie from Aunt Polly's told me they were trying to sell it this past winter because she moved the Fabric Shop a few miles away. Not sure if they are still renting it out, but this is the e-mail I have for her if it helps.

We sold the B & B and now it is a private home. However, we still own the Annex and rent it out to hikers etc. Doug & Maggie 518-582-2260

There are several motels in Schroon Lake, the Maple Leaf is our preferred one, too. Pitkin’s Restaurant back in town for supper.
The Maple Leaf has microwave ovens so you can heat up your breakfast. It’s only about 45 minutes to Upper Works, so not too bad. |

Thanks to Yvon for finding out that Aunt Polly's Annex is still around. I made reservations there for our upcoming trip to that region on May 22-25.
45 minutes in the evening is OK, so we might go to Schroon Lake or Long Lake for dinner, but I really want to be close in the AM.
