Algonquin, Iroquois 6/30

Though this is my first post I have been following this forum for a while now and it has helped me decided what trips I want to take. I know some of you are probably thinking why I didn't add Wright in my trip report. Reason being 2 weeks ago my buddy and I attempted to do all 3 but after reaching the summit of Wright we were both a little tired and decided to go back to Lake Placid and walk around. We figured that was a good enough start to the 2012 hiking season.

Yesterday my neighbor, his dad and I left Gouverneur at 6:00am and arrived at the Loj a little after 8:00. My neighbors just completed a half marathon last weekend so I knew I was going to be trailing most of the trip. The first mile to the junction was nice and easy as always. My neighbors were going to get Wright so they were off to a faster pace. I knew what to expect on the trail up until the turn off for Wright when that's where I met back up with my neighbors. I knew after reading books and the forums that the last .9 miles up to Algonquins summit was going to be brutal. I reached the summit before 12:00, I made better timing making it to Algonquin's summit then I did Wrights summit two weeks before. At the summit I rested up had my sub from subway and was ready to tackle Iroquois. It was very windy at the top so we didn't stay long. While getting ready to make our way to boundary peak we saw the sign that said <----Foot Trail so we made our way down the trail only to find out that the trail would take us to Lake Colden. Luckily we only went 25 feet or so down the trail until we came back up to the turnoff and saw "Iroquois-->" written in small pen. We made our way to through the muddy jungle to Boundary Peak then again through some muddy spots on our way to Iroquois's summit. Along the way I met up with a lady that I met two weeks ago while I was on my way down from Wright. This lady is a 46er and climbed Algonquin, Iroquois, and Wright two weeks ago and again yesterday. After reaching Iroquois's summit we took a nice 10 minute break to take in the views. It was 1:30 and it was time to make our way back to the Loj but first we had to go all the way back to the summit of Algonquin. At the top of Algonquin I went through 2 liters of water and 64ounces of Gatorade all I had left for the descent was a 32ounce Powerade. To make the trek down a little more interesting we talked french to most of the people we saw, even learning some on our way down. My knees and ankles were weak by the time I got to the waterfall I felt the need to wash my face and soak my hair in the water. A guy even offered me to refill my water bottle by using the pump he had, of course I accepted the offer and enjoyed the 10ounces of water he gave me!! At Whales Tail I finished off my Powerade and was just ready to get off the mountain as my legs were hurting bad. We ran most of the way from the main junction to the Loj and arrived at our car at alittle after 5pm. I was thrilled to finish my 10th high peak but a dinner at the Tail O The Pup in Ray Brook topped off a great day in the ADK's.

Thanks for posting - a very nice TR for your first.
Yes it was very windy on Saturday, we were right across Lake Colden from you an Mt Colden. Did that trip last year, I love the views up there on a clear day.

My wife says hello and congrats on getting Algonquin & Iroquois. The first time we hiked up that way, we only climbed Wright and headed back down. Luckily the mountains will always be there for the next hike. I went through 5 liters of water yesterday. Good luck on your 46er pursuit.

Thanks everyone! Was your wife the one I saw yesterday near Iroquois and two weeks ago on Wright? It's about that time to plan my next trip this weekend. Thinking about Mt Colden or Nye and Street. (Just so I get all the Mtns from the Loj area out of the way)

Very nice! We must have passed each other at some point between Iroquois and Algonquin. I was heading over to Al from Iro I think about 12:30. If you saw a solo hiker with really beaten up legs from a bushwhack that was me A great day up there, the wind kept the bugs away! Congrats on getting another two.

adkhiker, yes that was my wife Nancy, trail name "Nannygoat". Who else would climb up Algonquin Pass trail from Lake Colden three weekends in a row.

Congrats on Algonquin and Iroquois! When we did it we actually took the Avalanche Pass route that you almost hikes. It was tough. You can read about it on my website. Keep on plugging along; one at a time!
