ADK Weather conditions week of May 2-May 8, 2012

I see Mother Nature is conspiring to complicate my first hiking of the year, with the combination of possible snow and lots of rain. I'm planning on hiking from Wednesday May 2nd thru Monday May 7th. I have been glued to the weather reports which seem to be changing hourly. If anyone has any information on snowfall amounts on the mountains as I get closer to those dates, could you please forward it to me? I'm prepared to hike in the rain, but I don't have anything more than Stabilicers for traction in case of snow. I'm looking at Colvin-Blake, Sawteeth, RPR, and Armstrong-UWJ as my first hikes. I'd like to get in as many as possible. (Irene really cut my season short last year!) Any info. on conditions would be greatly appreciated.

I'd invest in a pair of microspikes at the very least. They aren't too prohibitively expensive, and they much better on packed snow instead of stabilicers. You'll use them again for sure if you plan to keep climbing peaks into the late fall...

I'd also go prepared for black flies... they are out early this year.

Thanks. I just took your advice and ordered Microspikes. Also, thanks for the info. on the flies. I was hoping to outsmart them this year, but I guess I'll have to share the trails with them once again.

Definitely expect ice. Yesterday I ran into lots of people that don't realize it's still wintery up there. Have fun

I had figured there would be some, and haven't hiked with those conditions yet. However, I can wait no longer. The trails are calling...

Last weekend we used microspikes - there was lots of ice on the north facing trails. With the forecast for this week, expect it will help hold the wintery conditions. We will hike on Sat or Sun to Dial & Nippletop (if there is no rain) and will post info on trail conditions. Hope all works well.

I'm guessing they'll be vicious regardless of where you go in the park? I'm heading to Pharoah Lakes May 4th.

Probably, yeah. Pharaoh Lakes never seems to be as bad as some other areas of the Adirondacks, but it can still get pretty buggy there too.
