Rebranding the Catskills...

From today's NY Times -

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/31/ny...ries.html?_r=1

Hmmm, not sure if any of the slogans really grab me, though the 3rd isn't too bad, but I can understand the need to get more people up there and dollars in to the communities.

I'm not impressed by the slogans or the effort at "modernizing".

I agree it is difficult to characterize the Catskills in a few words, and I do not think rebranding will have any tangible result.

Maybe MassHysteria or Sureno will know but you should of heard the flack when the town of Lenox hired some Foo Foo NYC marketing team to rebrand the town and the whole result was a whole bunch of people up in arms about what the company came up with... and looks like the campaign is dead in the water.

The only people thinking to rebrand the catskills are those that want Casinos and townhomes, I'm afraid.

"Where rocks have snot." Love it. I submitted "where men hike in ballgowns" but i wasn't selected as a finalist.

"Trillions of twig fossils per cubic mile" would be mine.

I think you have the best one so far. I wonder what the current image of the Catskills is? I am sure most of us here won't agree.

Catskills: You Can't Get There From Here

Seriously though the only one from the contest that's bearable is the "Always in Season" although it's still cheesy. I agree with those who've stated the people who listen to slogans are the ones you don't want there (unless you own a business).

I think "Always in Season" is the best also. But, that could apply to anywhere in the Northeast. As everyone has said, a few words will do nothing to breathe life back into the region. From an economic standpoint there is no question the area needs some revitalization, but I'm not sure the results of those efforts, if successful, will be consistent with the characteristics of the region that we so appreciate. It's a bit of a quandary for those of us that make a living here. As a business owner in the Mid-Hudson/Catskill region I stand to directly benefit from economic growth, although as a resident I'm not sure I'll be happy with a change in the demographic.

The one I appreciated most was in our local paper this morning, "The Catskills: Buy my defunct farm or I'll pee in your water supply."

Well, not exactly, but land of "harder to access waters"..... The reservoirs are boatable now but there are hoops to go through. The streams are so low now though you might be right about that!
