Presi itinerary and questions

Planning a trip to NH in the next month or two - looking to do the Presi Traverse as a 3 day backpack. I was thinking of doing it south to north. Park at Mt Clinton Rd and hike to Nauman tent site. Second day hike to the Perch. Third day hike out to Appalachia and take the shuttle back to Crawford Notch.

How does this plan sound? How long is that second day from Nauman to The Perch? Is that doable by a "normal" person? Looking at the map I figure it is somewhere in the 9-10 mile range. Are there other suggestions to break this up to a 3 day trip? I know I could descend below treeline and find a place to camp for the night but I suspect that would not be all that easy. Lastly, is south to north or north to south better for this trip? It seems people do it either way.

Thanks a lot.

I did the same hike but from north to south. The peaks get easier N to S so, this gets the hardest work over early and gets easier as you get tired. I hiked up to the Perch, set up camp and then went out and climbed Adams & Madison with a lighter pack. The next day went right to Jefferson and continued down the range having a late breakfast/early lunch on Mt Washington. Since I did Madison & Adams on Day 1, I was able to get into Nauman early enough to relax for the evening. The third morning I went out over Jackson which was easily doable, adding only a couple extra miles. I met two groups at the Perch that had done this S to N and said those final couple of climbs were really tough and one member of one group had bailed out around Mt Washington. Bottom line, I think it's OK either way but easier the way I did it. It's a great 3 day/2 night trip assuming you get good weather.
