I am a 46er
4 mtns maine accident

started with old speck no views fogged in climbed fire tower still no views. then next day tackled saddleback and the horn rain and fog no views. took a day off and set out for baxter started up abol trail a little steep on the slide fogged in all the way up to summit. we decided as group of five to go down hunt trail to change it up. well that was our first mistake still fogged in very slippery and steep. one in our group lost his footing and fell about 20 feet. we knew he was injured and pulled together as a team and headed out we still had over 3 miles to get out and 3000 feet of elevation to go down. a short day turned into a 10 hour day but we managed to get him out and to a hospital. to sum it all up hiking is dangerous and even though we had three strong hikers in our group we are lucky to have made it out with the injured hiker, so always prepare for and overnight if you have too. the hiker had road rash on his leg from knee to ankle and on his whole right arm, two broken bones in shoulder three craked ribs a pnuemothorax (witch later turned into one on each lung and a hemothorax. he was strong and in great shape and we managed to walk him out even with the steep descent. finally got back home to syracuse then the next day dislocated his shoulder getting out of the shower. he is very sore at the current moment but is thankfull for his support group on the way out. we wanted to get all the 4000 footers but will be back next year to get the the knifes edge and the rest of the 4000 footers.

Way to stick together and take care of each other. People and safety first, the mountains will be there when you come back!!!

Ken,
Sorry to hear about the fall, tell your freind I wish him a speedy recovery. From your account this was more than a simple slip and fall and the outcome could have been a lot worse if not catastophic.
Great Team Work in getting him out and to the hospital
I knew you are a driven peakbagger, but more importantly I also knew you are a great hiking partner.

Nicely done
