Feldspar Question

We are anticipating going into Feldspar in the next few days for a several night stay. We will grab the LT if we can, if we can't then we will grab the camp site. So here is my question, how obvious is the campsite and how large is it? If there is no room at either the LT or the campsite, is the terrain & vegetation such that a campsite could be made in the vicinity given staying in the restrictions? I would hate to make the long walk in and then find there is no room in the inn so to speak.

Thanks

Well the obvious, nice campsite at Feldspar is right acorss the bridge and has a no-camping sign. I'll admit, i've broken that rule before. There are two smaller sites down the path towards the poop-house. They are soft ground. Not too wet. Smaller however.

Across the river there are two that are elevated. These are nice but not as close to water
No chance all are occupied and the LT is full. No shot at all.

There are a couple campsites on the west side of the brook, to the right (N) of the LT trail. The one I stayed in is only big enough for one tent comfortably. Probably some other areas you could set up a tent N of that site and the LT. Directly on the east side of the trail there is also a site up in the woods, I didn’t check it out closely, but I think there was a recent TR where somebody stayed there.

I stayed there last year right around this time. There were no other campers in the area and only a father and his young daughter in the LT one night. It wasn't the weekend though.

The Uphill sites aren’t very far away either.

Here's one of those smaller sites toward the poop-house:

On Monday, I saw the ADK trail crew were in there building a new bridge over the Opalescent to the lean-to, replacing the one which Irene took out. It should be done now.

Thanks all!
Great - we are thinking of going in on Sunday so people might be heading out after the weekend and freeing up space. Sounds like there are a lot of options. Appreciate the input!

Dan, I've stayed at the one site across the river from the LT and it was a great size for 1 tent and 1 hammock. I think everything barely filled in the middle of Memorial Day Weekend. You should be fine.

We even could have fit one more tent in the muddy spot we used as "bear can land"

What are you going to be hiking, Dacker Dan? We will be in the area all week at Random Scoots; maybe our paths will cross at some point.

The plan I have cooked up, subject to ADKGurl approval, is to hike in Sunday via UW to Fledspar and set up shop either in the LT or camp site. If we have any gas left over after the 7+ mile full pack hike, head to Sky & Grey. The next day, Cliff and Red. Tue - out. The weather looks awesome, 71 degrees, sun, no rain. Sky and Grey are the main objectives, Cliff and Red are optional. I will know more tonight after I speak to the boss.

I think you will miss my son by a day. We are doing Gothics, Armstrong & UWJ on Monday; maybe add Sawtooth (is the trail opened?). Tuesday might be a rest day and then we are going to head for Lake Colden via Avalanche Pass and maybe try for Marshall and our son is going to go on and do Cliff and Redfield, Gray and Skylight and a bunch of others and stay a couple nights in the woods and we will pick him up at somepoint on Thursday or Friday. We are going to try to get Giant and RPR while he is out and about. We are up there for the whole week, just not sure how many days in a row I can keep up. Playing it by ear. Right now the only bad weather day looks like Friday.
Safe travels and Happy Hiking to you guys.

Well the boss is home from summer camp and it's a go for Sunday. The decks are clear at work so unless something happens we should have a great couple fo days in the woods.

You'll have a great time! One of my favorite overnights doing those four peaks with my son. Plenty of water, great options for sleeping, and easy access to all of the peaks once you get up there.

Have a great time Dan! I went past the Feldspar camp ground around 8:30 am last sunday after breaking camp at Uphill Camp, and there were two guys busy building a new bridge across the Opalescent River to the lean to on the other side. they were still working on the base for the tower. I spent three nights at Uphill and it was always full, and a lot of people were camping illegally such as along the herd trail to Redfield and Cliff, which practically begins at the Uphill Lean-to. That morning that I went past Feldspar, there were some vacant sites. It's hard to say. May luck be with you and ADKGurl, and may you have a wonderful time.
