Panther Gorge
Headed out to Panther Gorge on Tuesday the 31st around noon, arrived at 5 in the gorge. Found no one camping or in the lean-to. Wednesday hiked Gray and Skylight and returned early just before the rain. Thursday hiked Marcy, Basin, and Haystack in that order. Descended the steep trail to the gorge from Haystack and yes, it is very steep. Conditions were good and bugs were not an issue. By the time we left on Friday there were a lot of people camping and more headed in.

That sounds great Mike! I backpacked over Bartlett Ridge en route to Panther Gorge after coming down the Colven/Blake Coll last Summer and Haystack from that angle and proximity looked awesome! I wanted to return sometime to do that side of it. i remember the descent down into Panther Gorge from there was quite steep too.

Sounds like a great time. I want to get there someday soon. Which route did you take into the gorge?

We headed out from Elk Lake (8.6 miles). The trail is relatively flat and then ascends 1 medium sized bump before crossing Marcy Swamp and ascending to the lean-to. Other than a few rotting boards near the swamp the trail is quite nice. At a comfortable pace with full packs we made it in about 5 hours. Hurrying a little more on the way out we finished in closer to 4 hours and 15 minutes. I think it was a really good choice because it wasn't that crowded.
