Calamity slide

I don't remember where it was to cross the creek for this. Is the small cairn still there? Anyone know? I remember the slide was visible from the trail at one point, but Glen or Neil knew which way to head in, and it was a short jaunt to the base. I'm working on a possible trip for next saturday.

Trail comes in tight to the stream it is an obvious crossing point Large erratic right in the middle IIRC. Head NNE till you hit the run out.
Wish I could join you, still have not been back to finish that climb.

It gets you quite close to the summit. I think it was less than .2 miles to the top from the (very steep) headwall. The woods were thick, but not ridiculously so.

You can see the slides (lower narrower slide and wider upper slide) quite clearly on GoogleEarth. It should be easy to get a waypoint and bearing for when to leave trail and in what direction.

Also, from my TR.

Quote:
Another hour and we re-crossed the Opalescent without removing footwear and began the bushwhack to the slide. Mavs said, “cross the river, go 100 feet into the woods and head NE, you can’t miss it”. After 20 minutes of side sloping we hit the slide 100 feet from the bottom.

2nd time trail / river meet up

look at map
look at trail
see site of old shelter ( now a camp site ) still an out house?
10 min later trail close to river because of curve in river.
10 min after that trail is close to river almost no bank. That is where we crossed. After that the trail swings away from river and starts to climb a small ridge and you would be high up and away from river. Also river narrows in and has small cliffs on far side of river. Right where we crossed was wide and just upstream you could see small rock formations and the river much more closed in ( harder to cross )
After crossing we angled upslope to our right. We came out a bit high on slide. I would cross river then go in about 100 yards to open forest and just stay on contour and you'll come out to drainage / bottom of slide.

Thank you everyone for the responses, I'm fairly certain I could have figured it out once I was feet on the ground but I figured I would tap into the vault for the route. Alistair--sent you a pm

Didn't make it up. Got stuck at work friday late, then had to work for 10 hours saturday(it's not financially responsible to turn down overtime right now). I was checking my book, I'm at 88 on the hundred highest. I really would like to get out a few times and finish, quite a few of the ones I have left are rather easy. It's just really tough right now to find the time to get away, this having two toddlers thing is really making the 4 hour each way trip for a dayhike nearly impossible. I do really miss everything about hiking though

I'm at 82 of 100....Which mountains do you have left? Perhaps we could get together for a couple hikes if you're interested.

My short list: north river, sentinel, averill, boreas, henderson, hoffman/blue ridge, cheney cobble, calamity, sunrise, slide, gore, and wolf pond. Thats 13 left, my memory has been affected by the changing of daipers. Hopefully I will get up there at least once this summer.

We have these ones in common:
Boreas, Wolf Pond, Cheney, North River. I've been at 96/100 for something like 3 years. I would do Sunrise again at the drop of a hiking pole if the sky is blue. We could spice it up some by descending directly from Niagara after warming up with Camel's Hump.

The new wonder materials they make diapers out of give off low-level toxic fumes that destroy the interconnections between brain cells.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know if Boreas Mtn (or some route including the summit) will be on state land once the recent purchase from TNC is completed and opened up? It's hard to decifer on most of the maps I've seen.
