Mount Timpanogos Utah

Mount Timpanogos Utah

After Saturdays relatively short hike of Lake Blanche. I figured it was time to turn it up a notch. So 6:00 am Sunday found me pulling into the Timpooneke Trailhead parking area. It was much cooler at the trailhead. In the high 50’s versus the temperature of 91 in Provo when I left. Figured the quickest way to warm up was to get hiking right away.

Was soon hiking up through Aspen Groves. And arrived at an open meadow with views of the mountains bathed in the morning alpenglow.

The trail gains elevation steadily by use of switch back. Before long I passed by Scout Falls. At this point the trail begins to wind up a section known as the staircase. Gaining elevation via switch backs around cliffs and across lingering snowfields and talus slopes.

Some of the snowfields had a slight sense of danger while crossing them. As they were still frozen and very hard packed and slick. A few even had substantial drops if you were to slip and fall.

After the staircase section the trail travels through another open meadow where views start to open up. And then one more push of switch backs to a large open meadow at the base of Timpanogos.

From this point you get a good view of the route up to the Timp Saddle. Continued on up, Crossing the snowfields and talus slopes to the saddle. As you come up over the saddle you are treated to a view west over Provo Utah and north to Salt Lake City.

From the saddle to the summit the trail winds its way up thru some ledges and steps in the westerly cliff faces. And then the summit comes into view.

Took a rest at this point. But not for long as the wind was whipping nonstop. At times it was hard enough to move a person around. Got to the summit at 11,749 feet above sea level. I hung out on the eastward side of the ridge. And out of the wind. Just admiring the view of Emerald Lake 1500 feet straight down below where I sat.

Headed back out the Timp trail taking a leisurely pace back out the 7.5 miles of trail to the trailhead

What a variety of terrain. Snow, rocky areas, and meadows, looks like a great hike.
