Doodles( who I haven't seen in months) and I started out from Burham Hlw, headed up to Fir) blah blah all the way, then we turned around and went to BIG INDIAN, again:blah blah blah all the way there. This is why no one will hike with us. Then down to the trail and over to Eagle blah blah blah blah in the rain. Saw a new use for cairns there. From Eagle we walked down to a spot that looked good to go home from, seeing we were wet and cold, having wisely decided earlier it wasn't going to rain until much later. When the rain stopped briefly I spotted a ridge that wasn't supposed to be there and we decided we were lost so we walked down and up and down and up to the ridge, followed the woods road that was supposed to be there and were really confused. Every time the rain stopped I saw another ridge that wasn't supposed to be there. We finally found a stream and followed it for a long ways until we noticed either it was flowing upstream or we were walking back up the mountain. We then got out maps, compasses and even a GPS which were all wrong. And glasses. Didn't make any difference because the trucks were right where we left them, about 500' away.
Apparently we were on the right ridge to begin with, so we decided next time not to fix it if it isn't broken
We got some extra mileage, lots of side hill vertical, saw some beautiful new spots, ate many virgin nettles. The Irene damage in some of these back drainages is still happening; banks, trees and rocks still coming down.
Good day in the mountains to say the least.

No bears or rattlers? Plenty of nettles? Sounds about right. Except no bears.

Was down there yesterday too, almost made the drive up Burnham Hollow.

Speaking of if it ain't broke don't fix it... how about the glasses? I'm sure you guys would have made it out fine without any or all devices. Hope to catch up with you soon!

Thanks for the laugh. You got lost on that shoulder of Eagle a few months ago too, as I recall. Glad you got out.

Bears aplenty, to cold for the rattling snakes.

Funny, Doodles kept telling me the ridge was far away, like in the Neversink, and I kept insisting it was close enough to throw a medium possum at. Must be we wear different glasses. Yes, we must catch up,With you along we could drag this out for 3 or 4 more hours.
