Looking for other hikers with kids
Our daughter is 4.5 and we like to get out hiking whenever we can. So far she enjoys being outdoors, but I think she would love to hike with some other kids. We mainly hike in the Catskills, the Hudson Highlands (Breakneck Ridge, Bull Hill, Mt. Beacon, etc), and the Taconics (Brace Mtn, etc). Who else in the area has kids that hike? Would love to plan a hike/backpack/camping some time this summer!

Woodzy and I both hike with our kids, even together when we can find weekends in common. My daughter Bea just turned seven and we have been doing cats mostly (cat fire towers so far and a few others, she loves Balsam Lake Mt especially when Tom and Laurie are at the tower). I know Bea and myself would be game probably Woodzy and his kids if the timing is right.

We spoke on Backpacker, yes? (punkybrewster) - I have a 6 and 8 year old and would love to team up with some other parents to go with. They get out of school end of June so the schedule frees up then. Mostly weekends. Let me know!

And we have a few grandchildren who love to go as well, fire towers and lean-tos have been their destinations the last two years and there is the Catskill Adventure Patch, the walkway patch, geo-caching - plenty of fun! Let's make some plans!

I have five kids: 15, 12, 8, 6, 4. The two older ones are working on their 46 with dad. The 8 year old is my avatar and has climbed a bunch of smaller peaks, including Blue Mt. without a single tear. She will be doing her first HP this summer at some point. Any suggestions? One of our favorite starter mts is Coney Mt., just south of Tupper Lake on Rt. 30. Excellent views. We will probably do it again this summer (early Aug is our big trip). The first lesson I learned about hiking with kids: bring the bug nets, just in case. :-)

Thanks for replying everybody. Next time we are planning to head out I will post and see if anyone wants to join us (of course, we'll need to be more organized and choose our hikes a little earlier than the morning of, lol).

Well, we're tentatively planning to hike/camp in the Catskills this weekend if anyone is interested (if weather holds). We would likely heat up Saturday and hike Peekamoose (and maybe visit Blue Hole swimming hole), camp at Sundown Sat night, then head out Sunday (maybe short hike? will see how feel). I'll post a separate thread, but thought I'd give a heads up in case anybody with kids wants to join us!

Will be hiking the Red Hill FT on Sunday with the kiddos. Will cross of my final FT and give the kids a chance to muster up the guts to climb it.

Don't forget if it is the final fire tower, you are eligible to enter into a drawing at Morgan Outdoors in Livingston Manor and you can get that fire tower patch at the Catskill Center for Conservation and Development.
I am quite certain we are Adirondack Bound with the grandkids this weekend, if we do not go, we will see if we can join in the fun in the Catskills with all of you. Regardless of our plans, have a great time out there with your kids this weekend! |

Strange as it may sound, Saturday is our wedding anniversary and since we got married on Whiteface - Whiteface it is!
We also hope to grab Belfry Fire Tower and Cooperas Pond lean-to......maybe Mt Jo or Owls Head or Baxter......we'll see how it goes. We do have to return to the Cats by late Sunday. |
