Redlining Question

So, I've often wondered about redlining the Catskills, that is, completing every bit of trail. I wonder, do road walks count towards the trail hiking? The southern bit of Mink Hollow Road, for instance, is marked blue like the Mink Hollow Trail. Portions of Basily Road and Black Bear Road are marked red and yellow.

So does one have to complete the road walks to have properly "finished" the trail? What about snowmobile trails, like the extensive ones near Mongaup Pond and the Campbell-Pelnor-Trout Pond area?

There is no governing body, this is completely up to you.

It it was me, and it had a red line, I would do it. But I'm not doing it!

As TFR state, I think that is up to you, but where do you draw the line? How about relocation of trails, new/old switchbacks, etc.? I think whatever you chose to do, just be consistent...

Don't forget the Long Path, if you consider that a catskill trail, you would have to do the road walk to Phoenicia from Woodland Valley, for example.

I'm redlining. It's my only active Catskill list. I'm working on it very slowly. Even more slowly than my nonexistent grid. And I am not going to road walk.

Part of me is tempted to do the road walks...or at least any place that is marked by Catskill trail markers on the trees. The Long Path might be a gray area in that sense, but I suppose you could do the off-road sections only. Ahhh, details...

I notice a snowmobile trail in the western Cats that crosses private land. It's labeled as being no entry, except on snowmobile. I wonder if a bicycle counts for the road sections?

Or you could just wait until after this summer, when the new section of trail over Cross Mountain is completed...

Hi Deset, Is that really going to happen? I have the proposed trail on a set of maps but have never heard of them opening it up.

Are there any known red-line finishers for the Catskills?

According to the NYNJTC publication, they are starting work on it this summer.

...and what about the FLT? Aren't there some significant road walks on that as well?

I wonder what it means for the Terrace lean-to?

I know that there was discussion at one point of phasing it out once it reaches the end of it's life span. I stayed there last spring, and the lean-to is in excellent shape- decades of life left in it, for sure.

I suspect we'll probably start to see more people staying at it once the new trail is finished. Although, perhaps not- there is no water source anywhere near the lean-to. Even the water source shown on most maps west of the junction, on the trail to Woodland Valley, is of questionable reliability. I spent some time searching the nooks and crannies of the ledges below the lean-to while I was there, and also found nothing.

I'm redlining the Catskill trails.
But only the parts I like.

I'm redlining the parts of the trails that I hike In fact, I've redlined every inch of trail that I've hiked on.

I marked mine with a yellow highlighter. Does that mean I need to start over, or can I just be a yellow liner?

Personally, since the trails on the NYNJTC maps are already shown with red lines, I draw my lines for the Catskills in blue...
