Interesting....! I would think most people set goals and try to achieve them on their own terms for self satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment. Some goals take a short time, while others many years, to complete.

If people actually do this to get their name on the roster they are cheating THEMSELVES of the thrill of reaching each peak and especially the feeling that comes over one's self as the final summit is reached!!

I would have one of the unrecorded ones too. That was the situation when my friend Rudy, a 5 timer, the guy that had taken me on my 1st High Peak urged me to write up my recollections and 'send them in.'

It took awhile to write them, re-write them, and then proof read them, but after I finished I decided it was really worth the effort.

Two years after I actually finished I got recorded.

I’m somewhat grateful for those who don’t submit their applications in a timely manner: They allowed me to get a number down in the 4000’s, rather than up in the 5000’s.

Or maybe it should be, ‘‘up in the 4000’s rather than down in the 5000’s.’’ Closer to the beginning, anyway.

At least there’s a number, not a guess like with the White Mountain list. I’m anal.

#7116 here. Trying to work the dinner into our schedule. Think my wife will consider it for our wedding anniversary dinner?

#7207...finished August 20th, I too was very surprised by the number of finishers this year. Don't know if I'll be at the dinner, will see when it gets a bit closer.

We should probably not be surprised to see an increase each year....More people know about the "46"...the peaks are more easily accessed these days...anyone with reasonable fitness and enough spare time can finish them quite easily

I have heard lots of stories about Rudy, sounds like a good influence on you! I'm still working on getting my two anonymous hikers to become recorded 46ers. Since they hiked most of it with me, maybe I could sell them my trail reports

I think another factor in the increase is folks on this forum who share stories of their incredible journeys with friends, family, and co-workers and invite the newbies along on a couple hikes and get them hooked. It is like a giant pyramid scheme with great personal payoff when you see your friends, partners, and children finish the 46!

Bill, I agree with the first part...but I think "quite easily" might be a stretch. I suspect there are many of us who thought it was pretty hard, but whose definitions of easy and hard have no doubt shifted as we gained more experience in the hills.

Or how many actually believe they hiked them.

I passed a large group on the way to Esther/Whiteface a few years back. It was a cloudy, snowy, no visibility day. I went over to Esther first. I could actually hear them talking when I was on the summit of Esther, so I figured they would be there shortly. Being such a small area at the summit I left so they would have room. I ran into them again on the summit of Whiteface. They asked where I went and I told them I went to Esther first. They said "we went to Esther too". They made it to the top of Lookout Mt.

Followed a lone track last winter up Sawteeth. Same type of no visibility day. The track stopped at the first flat area, a couple hundred yards from the true summit.

I'll bet they were both were recored as climbs.

Congrats to all the 2011 finishers!! We are shooting for the fall. Time to get my ducks in a row paperwork-wise! Shooting to complete before 8k (a small fire underneath my a%$). Mother nature might be on our side with this early spring as she was for the winter acheivers this year

My son and I finished in 2006 and never sent a letter. We did it for many reasons and a number wasn't one of them.

I see a lot of this especially in the winter when you can see peoples tracks and they end well before the Summit. I was turned away from the summit of Wright when I was just feet away . It was too windy for me to stand on the Summit so in my book it doesn't count.

We had the same experience on Seymour last Sunday. Three hikers were returning from "the summit" but their tracks ended at the first level spot on the ridge, a good 15 minutes from the top... well 6 or 7 minutes for Joe perhaps.
