Blue Mt. Firetower damage

I know that there are a lot of firetower people on this forum. I went up Blue Mt. today and saw that the plexiglass has blown out of two windows. The gentleman that was at the top when I arrived picked up the plastic and set it next to the tower. He left the frame where it landed about fifty feet from the tower. I know we had wind gust in the flat areas of 72 mph last week but I would never of imagined that it would take the glass out of a firetower. I thought those things were built to take anything. I hope that the damage does not give the state an excuse to remove it like they have done to so many others.

I think they actually use that one, so why would they?

In addition to that I believe Blue Mountain has a friends group that maintains the tower.

I has not been used since 1990 and yes there is a group that adopted it. I am not sure how active they are. The observation tower has not been opened in quite a while and even the ranger cabin is locked up now. Probably due to vandelism.

Years ago, about 35 of them when I was a young lad, I remember snowshoeing up to the top of Lenox Mountain here in the Berkshires. My intention was to climb the firetower and take in the gorgeous view. What a surprise to gain the summit and find the tower a twisted wreck of metal. That one was replaced with a newer one that still stands to this day, without the observers cabin, which burned off from an electrical fire. The power of the wind can be phenomenal!!

The tower is "used", I believe, in that there are communications antenna and weather equipment on it. None of the Adirondack fire towers are manned anymore for the original purpose.
