MacNaughton from Wallface Pond
Has anybody recently done MacNaughton from Wallface Pond?
How was it? The ADK trail map shows campsites at both Wallface Ponds and Scott Pond - which is better (for a group of 8)? |

As you approach Wallface Pond, it could get very muddy. There are herd paths off to the left. Your choice to take them or not... Once you cross the small stream that flows out of Wallface Pond, (there was a large beaver dam to walk on when we were there), just take a bearing and head up. The woods are not super thick. When in doubt, cheat a little to the right, as the summit sign is at that end. Coming down, you should be able to see the pond for a navigational aid.

I was there in the summer of 2010 and, if I remember correctly, the woods are thick near trail's end at Wallface Ponds. There is at least one campsite by the shore but it is obviously illegal. I didn't explore the eastern shoreline. If I had to pick a site for 8 campers, I'd cross the aforementioned beaver dam and try the west side of the pond because the woods seemed more open. The woods are all conifers, so you'll want to find the most mature stand of trees because they're likely to have more open ground.

If you follow the herd path that is close to the shore beyond the end of the marked trail you will walk right through the above mentioned campsite. It has a real nice rock jutting into the pond with a great view of your destination. If your reading the old guides the beaver dam inbetween two of the ponds is gone now having been cleared out in the spring(not Irene) floods of 2012. It's a rock hop now - the water has dropped at least a foot without the small dam. Might I ask a favor...If you happen to find a pair of brown eyeglasses would you be so kind as to return them to the trail register and let me know. I lost them somewhere between the first bump after Indian Pass brook and Scott's pond. Don Last edited by Hear the Footsteps; 06-12-2012 at 05:38 PM. |
