Ash borers found in Catskill Forest Preserve

Bad news:

http://dailyfreeman.com/articles/201...b597536202.txt

"State inspectors say they have found a well-established infestation of the emerald ash borer in Ulster County, including in lands within the Catskill Park’s Forest Preserve."

I saw this in the paper also. Sad news. I have quite a bit of ash on my property. At last look all seemed fine but I'm going to have to keep watch. Good firewood, but I would prefer to keep it standing and healthy. All the elm around me have died off. I'd hate to see the ash follow.

Now that the ash borer has been found locally it's especially important that people don't transport untreated firewood out of the area.

I may actually be able to keep pace with a one-legged Jay.

They have been in eastern Ulster County for awhile now, so no surprise (unfortunately) that they seem to be moving more into the mountain interior. At Esopus Bend Nature Preserve in Saugerties, there is an infestation. One can see some of the affected ash trees from trails. There is one small upside-dead and dying trees create excellent feeding, roosting and nesting places for woodpeckers and other birds and animals. Also why it's a good idea to leave standing snags in and around yards, parks and other places.
