  • Peek and Table 8/24/17

I was concerned with the trailhead parking situation given the Blue Hole issues. In the morning there was one other car and a normal quiet peaceful trailhead. In the afternoon, the circus was in town. Fortunately, there was a DEC Ranger on post at the trailhead. Great that DEC is actively fixing the situation, but also a drain on skinny resources.

The trail up to Peek showed fairly heavy use but surprisingly was quite clean, packed out a few items. The flat trail area of Peek was muddy. The trail between Peek and Table was damp but not muddy. The washed gravel soil seems to drain well.

The water source on Peek is running at a trickle. The 'pool' at the bottom is full with only a trickle flowing onto the trail. The water source on Table by the lean-to has good flow, probably 2 - 3 gallons per minute from the pipe and about the same flow from the side of the hill above the pipe.

The lean-to area was nice and clean. Remembered to bring a garbage bag, but was happy to not need it. Saw a few recently used illegal campsites near both summit areas. Saw the same on Twin and Sugarloaf two weeks ago.

Great weather and great day to be out.

I read in the weekly DEC ranger report that over 1,200 people visited the Blue Hole last weekend, and that several tickets were issued. Maybe this will eventually help decrease the crazy crowds and educate people about backcountry ethics and rules.

Maybe if the ranger could get away from the Blue hole and up the mountain, those illegal campsites wouldn't be so used. Deb, where are you viewing the weekly ranger reports for the cats?
