The response of DEC is an eye opener. Reminds one of Rt 73 in St Huberts. But maybe much worse or more density of hikers there.

My boyfriend lives a mile away in Cold Spring and I often hike in the area since it's about a 10 minute walk to the first trailhead for Bull Hill. It is insanely crowded. I believe that the NY-NJ Trail Conference stewards counted about an average of 1,800 hikers per day on weekends this year just at the Breakneck trailhead. I'd say that the parking lot holds about 30 cars, and there are usually cars lined up along the side of narrow Route 9D for a few miles between Little Stony Point and the Wilkinson Trail.

If anyone is interested in the proposed Breakneck Connector Trail and visitor center project, you can read more at: http://www.hudsonfjordtrail.org/breakneck-connector and

I hope the DEC gets the trail closing and opening coordinated with the investment by Metro North.
Now and then I've thought about going there and seeing what it's about. Now I'll have to wait and see.

It's a great hike despite the crowds. Fun scrambles, and the views are excellent.
