  • FYI: Possible rescue on Giant (2017-06-17)

While driving past the Chapel Pond trailhead yesterday (June 17th, 6:15 PM), I saw a DEC truck, a ranger holding a walkie-talkie, and an emergency services vehicle from Keene Valley.

You're probably right, but don't they use Giant often for practicing rescues?

I crossed paths with two hikers that were present. A man fell unconscious with heat stroke and was given IV fluids and carried off the mountain.

I had a suspicion it was that. It was a hot day and the Ridge Trail has exposed stretches of rock that can make you feel like bannock. A few summers ago, I recall the Summit Steward was handing out bottles of water.

Yes, I hope he is ok as well. I decided to abandon my final peak of the day as the heat and humidity were quite intense and I think our bodies are somewhat still in winer mode and not so used to the heat. Several hikers would have definitely liked to take advantage of someone distributing water as many ran out quite far from any water sources.
