  • Baxter Mountain Trail Very Icy

Walked up Baxter from the 9N side today. Trail is a river of ice. Microspikes were barely sufficient. If I had to hike it again I would wear full crampons. This is an FYI because the trail is popular for families with small kids. Kids would need full crampons, the skills to use them, and a spot from a secure adult in a few of the steep spots.

Kids and crampons don't mix very well. Maybe by the time they are teens. Competent adults in crampons, kids in some sort of safe traction (e.g. snowshoes), and short-roping can be quite successful though! Once I got a bunch of young ones up the river of ice on Noonmark (well half way before hot chocolate was more exciting than the summit) using more short rope techniques, improvised harnesses, and body belays, then I ever have used on a real mountain. Caught an amazing amount of falls too. A few tears and lots of laughs were shared. Fun day out though!
