  • Cliff from Upper Works

Calamity Brook Trail reasonable with a number of short mud pits until 1 mile from Flowed Lands. From then on nearly continuous water and mud. Ditto from Flowed Lands to the Colden Dam. From Colden Dam to Uphill Brook LT and the turnoff to the Cliff/Red junction the trail was a continuous mud wallow. From the Cliff/Redfield junction to the steeper slopes below the cliffs of Cliff the mud is of biblical proportions, then again for a number of stretches above the cliffs. However, the bulk of the trail to Cliff's summit is not as bad as the the Colden-Uphill brook trail. Slow going most of the day for an 11 hour outing.

I wore Tingley rubber overshoes on top of my sneakers and was very, very glad to have done so.

Neil, have you seen this trail with less mud/water before?
Is there a chance that it can improve in a week or two?

I have seen it in much better shape. Two weeks of hot and dry weather would improve it a lot.

On your recommendation I got some Tingleys and used them on some April hikes. I didn't think of bringing them along for a week of hiking in July but they would have come in handy!

Avalanche Lakes trail closed. L. Arnold-Feldspar flooded. Didn't want to go over Marcy.

Sylvie wanted to do Cliff. She realized she was in the high 30's and has gotten a low-key hankering for finishing. However, Cliff "dampened" her enthusiasm. She has yet to do: Marshall, Allen, Don/Emm, Panther/Couch, Hough/South and Allen. She is leaning towards waiting for winter.

Av Pass trail closed? DEC site says closure starts Aug. 15 and goes through Aug. 25. Has that changed?

I think those are the dates I saw listed on the board at the HPIC on Saturday. You could call there to be sure.

This does not sound hopeful for doing Redfield/Cliff this coming weekend.
