  • Whiteface - March 4, 2017

This report may be useless because in 2 days there will be rain and above freezing temperatures. However, on Saturday, March 4, the trails on Whiteface were very icy in many places with any remaining snow frozen almost solid. Not a lot of snow remains at lower elevations. There is certainly more of it higher up, but most of that is rock solid and/or hard packed. There are still some sections high up with more than 8 inches depth, but I would not recommend snowshoes for safe travel.

Microspikes or Hillsounds could get you through all this, but there were definitely icy sections where they were at their limit. Kahtoola K10 hiking crampons seemed to be the best choice for these conditions but less aggressive spikes would also work, and full crampons would not have been out of place.
